My husband sent me this link to one of the many web comics he reads. This particular one is about two of my favorite things: grammar and fanfic. Run the cursor over the figures after you read it. I'm still giggling.
I was an English major in college with an emphasis in Linguistics (as opposed to literature) and was actually looking forward to taking grammar classes. But I quit before I got to the classes for my major.
Oddly, considering how much I love reading and grammar, I didn't take a single English class in college after freshman writing. It wasn't a deliberate choice or anything; it was just that at first there were so many other things to choose from that I hadn't taken in high school, and then later I had all the major requirements. But I'm sorry now that I didn't take any English.
If I ever win the lottery (which I won't, because I don't actually play it), I think I'd take random college classes just for the fun of it. My aunt told me something like that while I was in school, and I thought she was crazy, because I was only focused on getting it done. But now, I see that she was totally right :)
I took a bunch of lit courses which I really don't like. As much as I like to read I hate being forced to read boring books simply because some people think they are important to culture, lol. Although I did enjoy the modern American lit course I took, though.
But I quit school before I got to the grammar and writing courses which I thought would be interesting.
And I totally get the whole just taking classes thing. I'd love to audit a bunch... learn new things without the pressure of grades and stuff. I love learning stuff. I hate writing term papers and taking tests that are worth 40% of my grade. Blah.
Maybe it's mostly an American grammar standard? But I'd only heard of it because editing is part of my job, and even so, I must admit that I've never read it.
I have it syndicatedy rssey thingie thing onto my LJ, and it doesn't take up a lot of space and some of them are pretty funny. MOST of them I don't understand, but I'm not a TOTAL COMPUTER NERD so that's why, I reckon.
I love the "geeky" humor that its creator brings to xkcd. There are a few posts that mix romance and science in a completely adorable way. Being a non-STEM student, I appreciate anything that can make science understandable to laymen. :)
