I've enjoyed every Bill Bryson book I've ever read. They used to live not far from here in New Hampshire, so his kids' high school sports careers were splashed all over the local paper. One of them, as I recall, was a very gifted cross country runner.

I've woken my husband up with suppressed laughter that way reading Bryson, James Thurber's My Life and Hard Times, and Kimbrough and Skinner's Our Hearts Were Young and Gay, a must-read as it is the account of two Mawrtyrs making their world tour in the twenties, well-written and funny.

There's a column in this book about his oldest son being a runner. I don't think that's where it ended up, but I definitely remember a mention of the son having approximately 6,000 pairs of running shoes...

Thanks for your recommendations! My to-read list is insanely long at the moment, but I will definitely add these and look forward to reading them eventually :)

Definitely! I'd lend it to you if I owned it, but the good news is that it's definitely available from the library :)
