I'm so glad to hear that you think the portrayal of Cassie works! I know very little about teenagers other than having been one, but this is definitely the way I was at fourteen. Well, the hopeless romantic part is, not the whole having-athletic-skills part, which I decidedly do not!
Sam, being intelligent, has arranged instead to have a loaner teen, one she can give back when she starts to make her head swim from the mood swings!
These are very much my thoughts on my I love being an aunt. I've always loved that we get the fun parts of hanging out with our nephew, but when something goes wrong or he's upset, he goes for his parents instead of us. He's not a teenager yet (he's 8), but he has recently discovered that he knows everything, which is kind of entertaining. Also, he's flabbergasted at how bad we are at video games :)

No matter how hard they tried to fight it, Sam and Jack weren't fooling anyone, and who could blame Cassie for trying to help things along? I sure would have!
