Upon reviewing my list, I see that I didn't spend nearly as much time reading this year as I have in previous years. (I don't count/track audiobooks, but I listen to them every day on my commute to and from work.) Since I've been recording my books, I found that the other years where my total was lower had to do with a great deal of time reading fanfic. Sadly, I've barely done that this year either. This time, I suspect it has more to do with time spent playing Words with Friends. This is also my worst year ever in terms of posting about books; I only did that for one of the 20 books I read.
Most of this year's reading has been new (to me) books; I only re-read three books. The Cynthia Voigt books were comfort reading after a bad scare with Es during the summer, and I re-read The Enchanter Heir before reading The Sorcerer Heir, the final book in Chima's Heir Chronicles. Damn, I love her writing!
Probably my favorite things I read this year are the Bee Ridgeway stories: The River of No Return and its prequel novella, The Time Tutor. The author is a professor at my alma mater, and though she didn't arrive there until after I left, I was still curious and excited to read her work. When I was unemployed last year, I got an email about Ridgway attending a meeting of the college's local book club. I didn't go because I hadn't read the book and was trying not to spend money on books or transit into the city, but after I read the book, I wanted to kick my own ass for missing the chance to meet her. Hopefully I'll have the chance again when she writes another book, which I fervently hope will be set in the same universe. It's a world of time-travel, history, adventure and romance, and I just loved it.
I'm pleased to say I enjoyed every book I read this year, which is always a plus. The Goldfinch was a bit of a depressing slog at times, but overall, I'm glad to have read it. The Divergent series was lots of fun, and the four book club selections (numbers 1, 6, 13 & 18) were all great. The Rosie Project was particularly fun, about an Australian professor with almost no social skills (think Temperance Brennan meets Sheldon Cooper) trying to find himself the perfect wife and meeting almost the opposite of his supposed ideal.
OK, good times, and better luck (to me) next year for more reading and book posting. With that, I'll get back to Rick Riordan's The Blood of Olympus.
