Yeah. That made me very sad. I'm not that surprised though. It's political. Had they elected a progressive pope, it could have been seen as disrespectful to John Paul II, so they are forced, in a sense, to elect another conservative. Considering his age, I'm hoping they elected him as an interim with a progressive being planned after Benedict. I can only hope that during his papacy won't set the Catholic church farther away from any hopes of modernizing.
I hope so too, but I'm not sure it's very likely. Many fear that he will continue to block all efforts at reform out of a sense of 'legacy' and accompanying legitimacy. I saw one commentator who actually wrote that there was a mandate...ick. If anything the growing disinterest and shrinking numbers of clergy/people entering orders suggests a need to modernize... or is that just my opinion? Anyway, I'm rooting for the South American! At least he'll do something useful like...fight poverty...make reforms useful and applicable to a vast majority of the world's catholics, etc. *crosses fingers* Is it wrong to hope somebody dies soon?
Yeah, no kidding (although, i won't include myself as part of this "we"). When i read the article on my homepage about it, the first line i happened to glance at was one that talked about how he was against gay marriage and stuff. I didn't really read the rest of the article. I figured it would just piss me off. I really hope he has at least a moderately progressive view on environmental issues. If not, then between the catholic church and the united states (and a lot of the middle east... and, to an extent, every other country in the world), we're doomed!
Ha ha. What with the irony of life and all, this "interim pope" will probably live to be 105 or something. lol. Yeah, I heard on the news that he's like back in the 19th century with his views on women. And he's very anti-other religions and says that the Catholic Church is the only "right way." And look what else I read about him: "In The Spirit of the Liturgy in 2000, Ratzinger attacked Rock and Roll as "the expression of elemental passions" and described rock concerts as becoming "a form of worship ... in opposition to Christian worship." However, he is a great lover of classical and folk music." - from some newspaper.
Why must the world be run by these ridiculous people??? AAAAAGH!
Actually we talked a little bit about why the world is run by ridiculous people in my Human Growth and Development class yesterday... It's related to the state of intergenerational caring. Up until about the 1980s, every generation took some consideration into the wellbeing of future generations. In about the 1980s, however, this intergenerational caring faded away. The leaders became unconcerned with the future, and instead focused on the present, leaving future generations, our generation to deal with the problems they create.... That trend has continued, with even more irrational and ridiculous people being elected into office, with few exceptions.

The Church just needs some time to focus again, and then we can be all Inquisitiony again.
