Attitude is half the problem.
I can't say I EVER understood why industrial appeals to elitists. They should go listen to Neofolk or Freeform Jazz or whatever else passes for music to people who have no actual ear but just like to feel they're better than everyone else.
That said we're talking a relative minority.
A very loud mouthed, pushy and domineering minority however. Who seem to specialise in trying to talk people out of liking bands. Rather than into them. Which sums up the problem nicely.

I put up a long interview with Jamie Blacker of ESA and was joking with him that by the time I got done spreading the word about it I'm sure at least one CD would be sold. I just couldn't guarantee it would be one of his. :/

In fact, it's quite a testament to the music how well the genre has persisted over the years with such a lousy "scene" supporting it.
I know you've said it before, and better than the way I'm about to state it, but it bears repeating: that's always been metal's greatest strength, the sense of wanting to share, to let people in on the scene. Friendlier crowds, people passing out fliers and samplers after the show ... sounds simple, but it goes a long way.
