'The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there' (apparently) - a column

Unlike LP Hartley and the entire premise for his novel, 'The Go-Between', I'm not normally given to nostalgia. While I have memories, pleasant or otherwise, from times gone by, I can't say that I see the past in anything other than a pragmatic way. The definition of nostalgia is: a sentimental longing or wistful affection for a period in the past. ( Read more... )

The theme from Robin of Sherwood still makes me feel like a teenager.

I know what you mean. That was one of the Clannad tracks I sent my friend. :))

I would love to have a copy of that Irish music CD... just saying! In return I could send you a CD of Canadian music. :)

Make sure you include Family Matters and Fresh Prince of Bel-Air on that TV theme song collection! :p

Wow - wonderful to hear from you. :))

I'd be delighted to do you a copy of the CD. (It's almost like it was always going to end up coming your way anyway, because, spookily, I designed a simple cover with horses on it.)

I'm not sure whether you want to know what will be on it or not (if you want it to be a surprise), so I've put the track listing I used in a reply to the anonymous comment you left. That way, I thought, you wouldn't be sent it automatically but can find it if you want to see - if you see what I mean.

I'll try and get it done at the weekend, then I'll be in touch about where to send it and stuff.

Well Ireland is synonymous with ponies for me! That's why I originally fell in love with it... my favourite breed when I was younger was the Connemara Pony. It still is... but I've given up hope of ever riding one, since I grew into a giant! But maybe I can ride a cross one day. :)

Hmm, I think I will leave the tracks a surprise!

Thanks!!

Is there a specific genre of Canadian music you would like me to focus on? I have a lot of happy rock in there right now. :p

In which case, I've deleted the comment with the track listing so that you're not tempted!

Happy rock sounds good. As we've discussed before, the only real no-go areas for me are country and jazz. I have some Canadian music, of course; quite a lot of Alanis Morissette, some Chantal Kreviazuk; an Arcade Fire album, some Simple Plan (seen them too), a bit of Barenaked Ladies (seen them too), Auf der Maur - actually the list gets longer the more I think about it. But, I'll leave it entirely up to you, and I'm very grateful. :))

Actually Robin Hood made me check out Clannad and I've never regretted it ...
I think it was also the first Irish music I listened to and look where I am now!

Literally! :))

Hope you're having a great time - well, actually I know you are. I also hope you're getting the peace and relaxation you need, if you don't get that in Ireland, you're not going to get it anywhere. :))

Inspector Morse
Jonathan Creek [I love that version of 'Danse Macabre']
M*A*S*H [either the tv version, or the original Suicide is Madness sung in the film]
Midsomer Murders [for the therumin]
Vicar of Dibley [for the wonderful version of the hymn..which I have sung in church several times. it's harder than you think.]
any other theme music by Howard Goodall

don't watch much, do I ? [or rather, some theme music just doesn't 'cut it' for me]

the new version of Sleepy Hollow.... a fantastic use of Symapthy for the Devil by the Stones

just a few suggestions. ;p

Hello. (*waves*)

Some of that occurred to me too. When I put the final list together (these things are about the only things I ever plan in my life!) there was quite a lot of orchestral stuff in there, so I had to rein it all in a bit because I wanted variety and more scope for linking things together dramatically.

I was a bit annoyed because I used Suicide is Painless (from the film) because I haven't got a copy of the TV series, instrumental version (which I prefer).

I had already, on another CD, sent my friend Morse and Danse Macabre - and I agree with you, that version is stunning.

And the thing is, I don't watch much television either, but I suppose some things, over the years, just make an impression, and the good stuff sticks.

as long as the 'Brady Bunch' and the 'Partridge Family' haven't crept in.

I have one CD of various classics... for playing very loudly while driving through some towns,. that, and a tub of yoghurt would be the only culture around.

though the 'Masochism Tango' is a great one to be playing when one is going through the Booze Bus line.
especially if there are 2 young men also in the car singing it [in harmony] at the same time.
:D

have fun doing the compilations
