♛ CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: Marin Yamasaki
Series: OC
Ability: Marin's ability incorporates two elements: force fields and, in Pokemon lingo, "status problems". She channels her energy to her palms before pressing them against space, whether it be a gas, solid, or liquid. A force field appears momentarily, acting as a shield to fend off enemies. The twist? Her force fields also come with a little surprise: upon impact, the opponent will either grow disoriented, feel extremely drowsy, or become completely paralyzed.

There are two downsides to her ability: one, Marin doesn't really have any control over which effect is added to her force fields. The effects are pretty much chosen like a roulette. Ironically, the most convenient one, paralysis (a confused or a sleepy opponent still has the ability to attack), has only a ten percent chance of being chosen. Two, because it's her own energy that's being used in battle, she can become very exhausted depending on how many force fields she sets up, how long they're present in battle, how sturdy they are, and their size.

Force fields last however long Marin chooses to, as long as she's still able to channel energy through them. They also don't surround her completely, so she's still open for attack. The status effects can last anywhere from thirty seconds to five minutes.

Marin's also not very good when it comes to offense. She's more useful in the support/defense department.
Position: Fourth year student
Appearance: Marin's no taller than the average female, standing at 5'2". She harbors shoulder-length black hair and light brown eyes. She's really nothing special in terms of appearance and her attractiveness levels aren't off the charts. On a scale of one to ten, with ten being the most attractive, most guys would probably rate her anywhere from a four to a six, if not lower.

Coming from a small town, she doesn't have anything too elaborate or vivid in her wardrobe. Her normal attire consists of either a plain white t-shirt or a blouse, blue denim shorts, and sneakers. Every so often she'll tie her hair up into a single ponytail or a pair of pigtails. However, she does wish to acquire clothes that are a little more feminine.

PB: Misaki Ayuzawa from Kaichou wa Maid-sama!
History: There was always a still, calm moment in Herlie, El. And it was, in fact, the perfect life that the Yamasaki family longed for.

The two adults in the household ran a cheese wheel business that was well-known internationally for the great quality and texture of their cheeses. Business was always upbeat, and there wasn't much time to relax for either of the parents, who also had the responsibility of taking and picking up their children from school.

Fortunately, Marin Yamasaki was always finding a way to keep calm throughout all the chaos at home, and seized all the opportunities to bathe in the tranquil moments that were only found in Herlie. Where else would have such soft, evergreen fields, and clear blue skies for cloud gazing? Times like those served as relaxing breaks for the girl, especially after those days in school where she'd have to put up with the reckless badgering from her classmates.

Why the mockery? Well, Marin was... a bit different in the eyes of her peers. She had short, shaggy hair and a low, slightly rugged voice that gave her a boyish edge. And yet she was referred to as a female- her absolute gender. And of course she was susceptible to teasing for that, especially at such a young age, because she's a girl, but she looks like a boy. Preposterous, right? Ah, but on the other hand, some kids never laughed at her but were rather fascinated by her appearance, constantly asking her why she didn't want long hair or why her voice was so low. And this to her made those kids just as annoying as those who bantered her. That's why Marin often found herself alone- there just wasn't anyone at her school to click with, especially since classes were small and not many children were around in Herlie.

She truly did love her hometown for all of its natural beauties and wonders. But sometimes she just wanted to leave and escape from all of the solitude and frustration.

The opportunity to make a temporary getaway arose when Marin's mother was asked to take a business trip for promotional purposes. The family had been looking to expand their limits to outer countries. Fortunately, Marin was able to tag along with her mother and her older sister on a two-month trip over the summertime.

Being stuck in Herlie all her life, the new environments caused Marin to feel as though she really didn't know anything at all. The amazing architectural designs and the vibrant colors that all the other continents and cities had to offer left her in awe during the journey; her homeland was marvelous its own distinct way that separated it from the other regions, so she never got any of this before. Some areas screamed bright lights and flashing neon signs as if they wanted to be heard by everything in existence, and others were so quiet that even the sound of a feather dropping couldn't be missed. Herlie just happened to be everything in between.

But the one place that intrigued her the most, hands down, was Mirrodon. It felt so... weighted... as if it were a chore to breathe. The fog made the region feel like a gray void- so cold, so unwelcoming. And yet it was so fascinating that she couldn't stay uninterested.

The one thing that got her blood rushing during her whole trip, however, was the day when Marin and her sister happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. It started off with a ruckus, and then a fistfight, and then... a gunshot that filled the air. This was how it felt like to get mugged when your assailants had firearms... How it felt like to be so close to death without even realizing it. But this adrenaline rush is what got Marin to discover something that would stick with her through the rest of her life.

All it took was a push that came a millisecond before the gun was fired, causing the bullet to fly upwards towards the sky, and a burst of energy with a light blue tint appeared in front of her. The man with the gun flew back, and soon found himself on the ground, complaining that he could no longer feel his legs.

It took Marin and her sister a few moments to fully understand what had just happened. When Marin found herself doing the same thing over and over again to defend her and her sister from the other thugs, they found themselves being unable to think of any other logical explanation other than she's got it, she's got what those other people from Mars have- powers; the ability to summon force fields with side effects, to be specific. News of the incident spread throughout the city and soon found its way to Estrasia. So when Marin, her mother and her sister came back home, the first thing they were greeted with was an invitation.

Personality: It's more than likely that your instinct will tell you that Marin is a quiet young girl with an unfortunate lack of social skills. There's nothing wrong with that, seeing as though she usually spends her time by herself, and when she's put in a situation where she must converse, she's a bit curt and usually runs out of things to say before a conversation is even established. Even her expression and posture may give the impression that she's reserved- hands behind her back and wary eyes, with a habit of tucking a lock of hair behind her ear when the chance to talk to someone arises.

The truth is, you're only half right. Sure, Marin's not a girl of many words, and she is indeed shy when approaching newcomers. But it's not that she lacks social skills entirely- once you've gotten acquainted with her, she opens up pretty easily, and will talk much like a normal teenager, with added flustering and freak out moments.

The reason for her unsettling disposition is because of the minimum companionship she had when she was younger. Since Marin and her family traveled quite frequently for business affairs, she was never used to speaking comfortably with others outside of her family. That being said, if you're not too intimidating and if you're willing to offer quite a bit of your company to her, then Marin will be convinced that you're harmless, and she'll give you her friendship and respect in return.

As a consequence for her willingness to form friendships, Marin's grown to be a bit... naive. She'll automatically assume that if you're her friend, you're a good person who won't turn against her. This may or may not be true in your case- if it's the latter, then Marin's an easy target to manipulate. She hasn't quite been in a situation where she's been deliberately used before, so she probably won't catch on to your motives unless you tell her directly.

The one thing that sets Marin off (temporarily in most cases) would be the mention of her deep, boyish voice. It's also part of the reason why she doesn't like to speak, due to the badgering she had to put up with when she was younger. She hates her voice, for not only is it unfitting with her appearance, but because it makes her worried and edgy around others. And if you happen to comment on it, she'll automatically assume that you're offset by it- that is, unless you directly tell her that you like it.

Another flaw that Marin won't admit is that she's a slowpoke. She likes to do things at her own pace, and she doesn't like to be rushed at all. She will explode on you if you pester her enough to hurry along with anything, whether it be finishing her homework, getting her to wake up, whatever. No matter how nicely you say it, she has almost no tolerance for impatience. She'll try her best to be somewhere or to get something done on time, so don't bug her about it.

On the subject of her past, it's true that Marin dislikes the teasing from her classmates very much, and is often easily flustered and embarrassed by the thought of it. However, this isn't to say that she angsts on it when given the chance to. Sure, it bothers her, but only when you give her a reason to contemplate about it. On the other hand, she won't act as though none of the mishaps ever happened. She's come to terms with her misfortunes, and has accepted that yes, some unsettling things happened and that yes, things will get better.

Marin's awfully curious about a lot of things. It's just that some topics will get her going with questions, such as the subject of city life. Since she hasn't visited a lot of cities, despite her era of constant traveling, she's very eager to learn about the latest trends, riding subways, shopping malls and whatnot. It would be even more fantastic if you choose to share some of your knowledge (about anything, really) with her yourself, because she'll most likely be too shy to ask you.

♜ SAMPLES
Third Person Sample: It's the heart of all business and commerce. It's the heart of industrialism and production. It's the heart of the world's population, where the sidewalks and the streets are never empty. It is... the city.

Marin's hold on her sister's wrist loosens as they maneuver through the heavy crowd of people. There's the sound of a car horn that resonates in the distance, and the noise of tires rolling on crushed gravel mixes with all the chatter in her ear. The blaring lights from the billboards up above almost blind her when she glances up as the image of a young women with a bright complexion flashes on a screen with a mascara curler between her fingers.

You would never get any of this back in Herlie. Ever. The sidewalks, while not empty, were never as populated as how they were here, nor were the streets, or even the buildings. There were minimum vehicles on the road, save for the cows trotting their way on the paved road. The lights were never so bright and flashy, they were all streetlamps or ceiling lights that were timid and anything but outspoken.

She can't say she loves this place, but she doesn't detest it either. It's just... fascinating.

"C'mon Marin," her sister persists. Marin's eyelids flutter open- she didn't realize that she'd been slowing down. She struggles at first, but manages to keep up with her sister's pace.

"Ah, sorry." Marin's nose wrinkles the slightest bit. It was so easy for someone who graduated in an environment like this to keep up with the pace of the crowd without losing focus. Then again, her mom would be back at the hotel in two hours, and errands had to get done before then. Her eyes continue to wander and her curiosity never fades, but she allows her sister to forcefully drag her along the path to the strip mall a block away. If only there weren't so many people- Marin would have been able to use her force fields to shove all the people out of the way. But, ah, they'd all probably suffer from immense drowsiness, or they'd be extremely disoriented and they'd feel a prolonged pain in their heads afterward. Or even worse, they'd be unable to move... completely. And that would lead to a bunch of lawsuits and a hoard of money to pay.

So, she ponders, perhaps the city life isn't for her. Not if it meant living with her sister, who needs to get everything done right on the dot, anyway.

First Person Sample: [Static, static, and more static. That's all there is on the feed for a few moments. And then... there's a low, timid voice that can be heard. It's distant, but you may be able to pick out the words.]

Ah, this is the text function.... No... Voice...? Wait-!!

[There's a bit of stuttering that follows the small outburst, as well as a few clicking and shifting noises here and there.]

U-Um! Sorry, don't mind me! I-I pressed the button on accident! Am I not supposed to be doing this? Oh no... stupidstupidstupid.
