What this day means to me.

As most of you probably know, I am an avid reader of Andrew Sullivan's blog.  He is posting reader's comments today about their election experiences and I emailed mine.  I figure it won't get posted, but I wanted to keep it for myself.

I had a similar experience once. Ray and I had just moved into our first single-family home and had gone back to the townhouse complex we used to live in looking for our old exterminator to get his services at our new place. He had moved, too, but his next-door neighbor was the complex's landscaper, a nice older gentleman who had done some work around our unit in the past. We got to chatting with him about how not-fun house-hunting was, and he said, "I know what you mean. Last time I looked for a house, the realtor took us to some places I wouldn't show a n*****."

Ray and I just gaped, dumbfounded. Like you, neither one of us had ever heard anyone say that in person before. Certainly not in casual conversation! I wish I had that moment back so I could respond, but we were literally speechless, so we just left. But, yeah. It was shocking and eye-opening.

Oh, and that link made me tear up, too. I've been very emotional today. This is just so historic.

Wow. I've never -- to my recollection, possibly a racist relative I met once and have blocked out -- heard a white person use the n-word. Unfortunately, I have heard AA kids on the county bus using it.

That story made me tear up too!

Hard to believe it of East Tn, but I don't recall hearing it either. Maybe it's because we hung out with more enlightened people. But we both knew people who felt that way (W's parents for 2). Too bad Dan stopped you from saying something - that old man would still be reeling from your verbal smack-down.
