Interesting meditation on costume. I don't often wear costumes to work, but then, I often let my demons out around work on a daily basis to it's less exceptional in a different way. I will always remember the Halloween when you came dressed as a shrub. I do now note, sadly, that you did *not* go berserk at the time. Of course, that might be because it's not a very shrubby thing to do.

I think this is a fabulous theory of costuming -- a sort of Bakhtinian carnivale sort of thing. I shall add it to my arsenal of excuses when people ask me why I don't dress up for Halloween.

"You would not want to see me go berserk. Trust me."

I realize that this could be coming across as exceptionally curmudgeonly, even for me, particularly the snarky stuff about off-the-shelf costumes.

I'm really just exploring my feelings about costumes at work, and I realize that every workplace is different, and costumes can do different things, and that a change in atmosphere, even within the confines of a work context, can still be fun and refreshing.

So, while I think I'm on to something in my little rant, I really don't mean to be insulting people who are wearing costumes today! If you're having fun, then rock on!

I enjoyed your analysis of the nature of costumes, though I feel like you subverted your own theory by rejecting the "slutty" ones out of hand. ;-)

I propose that "slutty store bough costume" is to "creative artistic costume" what "rock band (game) 'musician'" is to "real musician."
