The secret is in understanding how the sensors work.
Read the finer details about the advantages of using
a f2.8 lens ... stuff like that.
Horizontal .vs. vertical sensors.
The center "cross" sensors.
etc...

I thought I knew, I guess I didn't.
But there's tons of good info here
if you know how to apply it properly.

Irregardless of what one *should* expect from some of these $1.5-8k... I always approached it from the angle of "it's a tool, and I'll learn how to use it to get done what I want". Reading forums, it seems like a lot of people see AF as "magical always-in-focus as long as the box was over my Region of Interest" mechanism ( ... )

Yeah, having great fun here with camera on a tripod and examining the exact characteristics of how a vertical rectangle sensor box re-acts to a horizontal and vertical object.
Then the same process .vs. a horizontal rectangle sensor box.

Both very different results but at least now I know.

And yes tell you the truth I also thought that
"""magical always-in-focus as long as the box was over my Region of Interest" mechanism""

Big mistake !

cheers :)

I deleted the second comment.
There's much more to add depneding if you're usign single shot or AI servo focus.
I'll do a proper post.

I assume then that you have read up on the size and alignment differences between the actual AF sensors vs. the etched marks on the focusing screen of the different Canon bodies...

Yes I have and I had sent my friend an email on that...
They take on different sizes depending if your using the horizontally of vertically.
I should post it here.

What's worse though is that I don't get the same results if I use One shot or AI-Servo on a static image. In fact one-shot gives me slight back-focus while ai-servo is almost right on... Again I know they both use different methods to focus but "I thought" they should be identical. It's not the exact science I thought it should be ...
