I meant sow- the correct designation for a female bear is 'sow'. Sow bears are known for their protectiveness for their cubs, and will attack and drive off boar bears which outweigh them by as much as 30%. They are also very good mothers, and teach their cubs how to forage for food.

Here in California, the most dangerous thing you can do is come between a sow and her cub.
