OK, so I'm not exactly fully awake some mornings as I wait for the 5:30 a.m. Metro, but one of the things I do to pass the time is people-watch. I'm pretty familiar with the regulars who ride the same morning train every Monday thru Friday, and I've taken to giving folks names in my head just for fun (yes, I am weird

I do that with people at the gym. I mean, not a lot else to do but people watch. They never have anything good on the t.v.. There's Crazy Lady (or Bag Lady) who is constantly talking to herself. She walks in every evening wearing the entire Este Lauder counter from JC Penny's on her face and always some weird floral decoration in her hair. Both remain intact for her trek through the weights, which she does wrong. Too much weight, too fast, with horrible form. And she's always pulling this rolling suitcase behind her everywhere she goes.

Then there's toothpick girl. I swear, my pinky's bigger around than her legs. And yet everyday, she's out on the aerobic's floor literally sweating her butt off as if she's going to blow up like a thanksgiving float if she skips a day or takes it easy.

i love people watching! sometimes i even make up stories about them!
many books about writing tell you that you should basically people watch, give them a voice and a life in your head then write it down in a book you always carry with you. and they then become the basis of characters in your future stories

when watching sport my family and i give the players names. pretty boy, buttter fingers and the like. but it sticks with us til the next game and the next
