1. We Need To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver. I dare anyone to read that then become a parent (I did, proof hope conquers all).
2. Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy. The book that forever reminds me of being a teenager, and funny to look back and realise how I didn't really get it first time around (it took a few hard knocks to really get it).
3. Miscarriage by Prof Lesley Regan. The voice of sanity following a pregnancy loss and indeed throughout a very difficult pregnancy. A must-read for any pregnant woman, just so you know your enemy in case the worst happens. Explains beautifully that it's not the end of the world even though it feels like the end of the world.
4. Everything by Roy Chudley - the definitive building textbooks. Everybody should know basic building maintenance. No ifs, no buts.
5. The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams. Not strictly speaking mine (it's Zoe's), but it's the most beautiful story imaginable that makes me cry every time I read it. To become real you have to be loved
