I have just returned from the Lincoln Police Department, where I applied for a handgun permit. Pending a background check, I should have the permit mid next week.
1. Criminals are not going to care, they will have one anyway. They might have to get it from the black market, but if they really want one not having a permit will not stop them.
2. Rights are something that can not be taken away. The bill of rights does not give us those rights, those are rights we inhernetly have, they are just affirmed by the bill of rights.
I really don't like that 'criminals don't care argument', it's seems too straw-manish for me, but I can't pin down why.
I'm sure that some people are deterred by the regulations. I don't believe that a convicted murderer or a mental patient should have the same right to arms as I do. Sure they can get them, but we shouldn't condone that.

Though, it's really sad that we have to ask for permission to excersise our rights.

The right to (legally) own a gun is a privilege that can be taken away, and should be in some cases.
