Time passed slowly in the fae world. Years seemed like decades, decades felt like an eternity, and what she imagined was months since she’d seen Lauren was really only a few weeks. Still, it had been too long, she mused. Bo kicked back on the couch with a newspaper. This was, of course, unusual for Bo to say the least but she was bound and determined to try something new. Ever since the Garuda, Bo had felt the rut she was in growing deeper still and life was boring. Tonight that would all change.

Kenzi flopped down beside her and scrunched her face. “Catching up on current events?”

Bo lowered the paper and looked at Kenzi, who sucked on a lollipop noisily. “Trying to.”

“It’s like I don’t even know you anymore,” she grabbed the newspaper and hopped to her feet. “After what you’ve been through, you should be forgetting the world’s ills, not reading all about them in this rag.”

She held out a hand. “Give it back.”

“Trust me sweetie, no good can come of this--”

A knock at the door sounded and Kenzi dropped the newspaper, scrambling for her bag. Slinging her backpack over her shoulders, she headed for the door. She kissed Bo on the cheek as she passed, “I’m outtie.”

“Where are you going?” Bo stood and grabbing Kenzi’s backpack, she reeled her back in.

“C’mon Bo-Bo, have a heart,” Kenzi pleaded.

“Kenzi, one night will not kill you.”

“See, that’s where you are wrong. You and the good doctor have a lot of bang bang to catch up on and I have a lot of soul searching to do at the Dal and by soul searching, I mean drinking.”

Another knock sounded throughout the clubhouse. “Hello?” Lauren’s muffled voice interrupted.

“Be right there,” Bo called before looking to Kenzi again. “Do this for me.”

Kenzi dropped her backpack as Bo walked to the door. “Hi,” Bo smiled cheerfully, holding the door open as she ushered Lauren in. Kenzi smiled from the table and waved half-heartedly. “Howdy, Doc.”

“Kenzi,” Lauren seemed surprised to see her, “hi.”

Bo stood between them in silence as the looked one another over. Finally, she spoke: “My human compatriots, tonight we drink, we cavort and we forget.”

Kenzi scanned the living room, looking anywhere but the two women whose eyes burned for one another. Her head cocked as her eyes settled on a DVD laying on the coffee table. “Is that Pretty Woman? I know you didn’t rent Pretty Woman…”

“You’re right, I bought it,” Bo said smugly.

“Oh, for fae’s sake, what have you done with Bo?”

“I thought it was a girls’ night…”

“I’m afraid I agree with Kenzi,” Lauren chimed in.

“Solidarity, sister!” Kenzi held out a fist to Lauren who mirrored her actions as their fists came together in what could only be described as the most awkward fist bump ever.

“A couple of killjoys, eh?” Bo teased.

“Did you really think we would bond over a hooker with a heart of gold?” Kenzi asked.

“Well, I certainly didn’t think we’d bond over Richard Gere,” Bo deadpanned.

Lauren laughed as Kenzi scrunched her face. “Definitely not.”

“Entertainment fail aside, who’s thirsty?” Bo lifted a bottle of tequila and unscrewed the cap before pouring three shots.

She sat beside Lauren, across from Kenzi and lifted her shot glass in a toast. “To girls’ night.” She smiled.

The first shot went down like fire, the four that followed coated her throat in velvet.

“So Doc,” Kenzi started, “We know you dig the science and all, but what makes you tick? Golf, tennis, volleyball, softball, brunch, Subarus, cat shows, scrapbooking, Tegan and Sara, the Indigo Girls--?”

Lauren didn’t say a word, she just stared Kenzi down for what felt like forever. Bo looked on as the first real test of the night played out in front of her.

“How ‘bout another drink?” Bo filled the shot glasses. Kenzi knocked back hers as did Bo, but Lauren remained locked onto Kenzi.

Finally, she blinked and considered the shot in front of her before draining it. “Nuclear fission,” she said looking into the bottom of her glass.

“That’s still science,” she looked to Bo as if she’d been cheated.

“Art history and--,” Lauren relented.

“If you say classical music, it’s off,” Kenzi gestured to Bo who poured her another. She slammed it back, the shot glass wobbling as she dropped it onto the table again.

Lauren downed another shot, wincing at its finish. “I am also a fan of molecular gastronomy.”

“Doc, that’s still science,” Kenzi was growing frustrated.

“It’s food,” Lauren argued.

“Who would anyone want to eat that?”

When they moved on to whiskey, Lauren was already leaning on Bo for stability and Kenzi had draped herself over the island, slapping the top whenever she wanted another drink. Bo’s resistance to alcohol was only half-true. She could drink with the best of them, but eventually she, too, would be shit-faced and delirious. But tonight her humans were ahead in that respect, mostly because Bo kept a steady stream of liquor flowing.

Bo lined the glasses up again. “Here’s to stirring the pot.”

“Hells yeah, sister,” Kenzi slurred, lifting her head long enough to down the drink in front of her.

The marathon of shots left Lauren flushed, tipsy and surprisingly flirty. She leaned into Bo, laying her head on her shoulder and hugging her arm. Bo hid the smile she felt spreading across her face, this was an unexpected bonus to girls’ night. So she lined them up again.

“Time out,” Lauren’s head lulled on Bo’s shoulder. “You,” she poked Bo in the arm, “are out of control.”

“What’d I do?” Bo smiled flirtatiously.

“I’m drunk,” she lifted her head for a moment before dropping it against Bo’s shoulder again.

“That was kind of the point.”

“Kenzi can’t even lift her head,” she slurred.

“Sure she can. ‘Nother drink, Kenz?” Bo slid a shot glass across the tabletop.

“I’m up!” Kenzi’s head whipped up and in a flash the shot had disappeared and Kenzi was face down on the table again.

“See?” Bo smirked.

Lauren eyeballed Bo who shivered uncomfortably. “So, you wanted me drunk, now what?”

Kenzi moaned. “Before you answer that--I’m right here,” Kenzi mumbled.

Bo threw back another shot and looked to Lauren again. “I hadn’t thought that far…”

“Even I know that‘s a lie,” Kenzi interrupted again.

Bo reached across the table and swatted her on the arm. “Go to sleep, Kenzi.”

“Ow! This,” she sat up and pointed to herself, “is out.” Kenzi pushed away from the island and staggered towards her room. “Keep it down,” she called as she disappeared through the doorway.

Bo’s eyes sparkled as she smiled at Lauren. She poured herself another drink and gestured to Lauren who nodded. They clinked shot glasses and gulped the liquor down.

“So it’s been kinda crazy, we haven’t had a chance to really…talk since the whole Garuda business.”

“I’m not sure if talking when we’re this drunk is such a good idea,” Lauren stared into her shot glass as if she were divining tea leaves.

“Are you afraid you‘ll say something you don‘t mean?” Bo reached out and took the shot glass from her, setting it aside before she covered Lauren‘s hands with her own.

“No, quite the opposite,” she stared down at their hands.

Bo untangled their hands and reached out to lift Lauren’s chin to look at her. “Would that be so bad?”

“I’m not sure.”

“What are you so afraid of?” Bo pressed.

In Lauren’s eyes a tempest swirled, of doubt, of fear, of sorrow. “Losing you,” she said simply.

Bo let her hand fall away. “I’m not going anywhere.”

“You put yourself in harm’s way every day.”

“Eventually, you’re going to have to take a chance on something, Lauren.”

Bo watched the conflicted expression on her face intensify, the storm front moving across her features.

“Hey,” Bo squeezed her hand.

Lauren shook her head. “How can you--” she was interrupted by a hasty kiss.

When Bo pulled away, Lauren leaned after her, nearly toppling off her stool. The sly smile that crept across Bo’s face said it all. She had won this battle. Bo poured another round of drinks and Lauren, despite beginning to wonder if she was approaching alcohol toxicity, drank again. She leaned on her elbow, her head rolled back and forth in her hand.

Silently, Bo stood. She took Lauren’s hand and pulled her to her feet; she swayed, leaning against Bo. Their separation had left Bo lonely and, despite the feeds Kenzi lined up for her, she was also a little lost. Lauren had a way of making things clearer only to complicate them again with her special brand of anxiety but it was Bo who could calm her. Bo slung Lauren’s arm around her neck and walked slowly towards the stairs. Halfway up the stairwell, Lauren turned to face Bo.

“You’re beautiful,” she sighed before dropping her head onto Bo’s shoulder again.

Her drunken compliment didn’t miss the mark, and as they reached the top of the stairs Bo kissed her. She tasted of whiskey and honey and Bo didn’t think she could ever tire of her.

She stumbled as Bo led her to the bedroom. “Easy.”

Beside the bed Bo began to unbutton Lauren’s shirt, slow and deliberate, mostly because she was drunk and clumsy, too, but also because she enjoyed undressing Lauren. It was like unwrapping a gift.

As Bo pushed her shirt off her shoulders, Lauren fell back onto the bed. “Are you going to take advantage of me?” The lopsided smile that played on her lips when Bo looked at her made her laugh.

Bo undid the button to her pants and Lauren lifted her hips as Bo peeled them away. “Only if you want me to.”

“I’ve missed you,” Lauren sighed, reaching up to touch Bo’s’ face carefully.

“Is that a yes?”

Lauren answered her with another kiss, tender and chaste. As they parted, she smiled up at Bo.

“I’ll be right back,” she said, kissing her on the cheek before standing over her again.

Bo walked to the bathroom with a bounce in her step. She opened the footlocker and gathered a few candles before returning to the bedroom.

“Ambience,” she smiled, holding up a pair of candles. Her shoulders sagged as she returned to Lauren, finding her asleep. “Shit,” she exhaled.

She knelt beside the bed, silently studying Lauren’s features: the way her hair cascaded onto her shoulders, the upturned corners of her mouth and the beauty mark just visible from the cup of her bra to name a few. Bo watched over her for quite some time, finally covering her over with the duvet and pausing to brush the blonde hair away from her forehead before planting a kiss there. “Goodnight.”

Morning came quickly, the sun invading the room through the cracks between the boards on the windows. She squinted and did a mental inventory. Her arm was numb, her head was pounding and she wasn’t alone but she definitely did not have sex last night much to her dismay.

First things first--her arm. She forced her eyes open despite the pain the light of day bestowed upon her and turned her head to find Lauren asleep on the numb limb. It was all becoming clear. Bo pulled her arm from under Lauren‘s head, slowly, painstakingly so. Lauren sucked in a breath and her eyes fluttered open. Bo propped herself up on a her other elbow. Lauren grimaced and closed her eyes again.

“How much did we drink last night?” she held her head.

“Enough to put you out.”

Lauren hands came to rest on her head. “Oh, god. I’m so sorry,” she shook her head.

“It’s okay,” Bo reassured.

“I just--I wanted--” she struggled.

“Lauren, it’s fine, really.”

She inhaled, locking eyes with Bo who smiled gently at her.

“C‘mon,” she patted Lauren’s leg, “let’s get some coffee.” Bo climbed out of bed and slipped into her kimono. Lauren redressed slowly, methodically and Bo couldn’t help but watch as her pale skin disappeared beneath one article at a time. Lauren was either oblivious to the forest fire crackling in Bo’s eyes or she hid it admirably well. She pulled the pants up to her waist and buttoned them, looking up at Bo as she did. Bo smiled again and followed her down the stairs.

Downstairs Kenzi was curled up on the couch, Pretty Woman playing on the television, the smell of coffee hung in the air.

“I thought you hated this movie,” Bo said.

“I do, but the cable is out--did you remember to pay the bill?”

“Guess not,“ Bo said matter-of-factly. Ever the bartender, she lined up three mugs and poured coffee into them.

Lauren dropped onto the cushion next to Kenzi.

Kenzi leaned over to Lauren and whispered, “I love this movie.”

“Me too,” Lauren whispered conspiratorially. “Don’t tell Bo,” she smiled.

Kenzi held her hand out and Lauren slapped her palm.

Bo delivered the steaming mugs to Lauren and Kenzi before doubling back for her own. Sitting at the island she sipped her coffee and kept a watchful eye trained on Lauren and Kenzi as they bonded over the pseudo-classic movie. She smiled. That was the point of last night, after all.

A few minutes passed before Lauren stood and crossed the distance to Bo, cradling her coffee mug in both hands.

“Terrible movie,” she teased.

“That’s the last time I pick the entertainment,” Bo rejoined.

Lauren laughed and settled on the stool beside her. “I was thinking…”

“What about?” Bo asked eagerly.

“Last night.” Lauren put a hand on Bo‘s thigh and Bo nodded expectantly. “Let me make it up to you?” The hand on her thigh squeezed. Lauren was never this forward and, quite frankly, it was a treat for Bo.

“I‘d like that,” her voice betrayed her hunger. Bo leaned across the gap and kissed her. A slow, purposeful kiss to entice and remind her of times gone by. As she pulled away, Lauren sighed again.

Kenzi kept an eye trained on the TV as she wandered into the kitchen--Vivian was getting her shop on, after all. She poured herself a bowl of cereal and, standing in front of them she chewed a mouthful noisily and looked at the women over.

“Okay,” she started, “if we’re gonna hang out together, you’re gonna have to tone it down. “

“Kenzi,” Bo warned.

“No, I get it,” she took another bite of cereal, “you haven’t bumped fuzzies in a long time--”

“Kenzi!” Bo barked.

“All I’m saying is go take care of that shit before you implode because it’s obvious that you both want it. Go on, march yourselves upstairs and make boom-boom so I can watch my movie in peace.” Kenzi punctuated her statement with another bite of cereal as she walked toward the couch again. Bo shook her head and looked to Lauren, whose amused expression said it all. She laughed.

“Goooo!” Kenzi ordered from the couch. “Jesus,” she mumbled, turning the volume up on the television.

Lauren slid off the stool and stood awkwardly in front of Bo, who still wasn’t sure about being ordered into sex, even if--especially if--it was with Lauren.

“This is--” Bo shook her head.

Lauren stepped forward and kissed Bo. She held Bo’s face in her hands and nipped at her lip before kissing her way along Bo’s jaw to her ear. “She’s right,” she whispered against Bo’s ear.

Bo didn’t get flustered easily but the sound of Lauren’s husky voice in her ear and her breath on Bo’s neck sent goosebumps prickling her skin and the hair on the back of her neck standing on end. The fire in her belly intensified.

“Ah, hell,“ Bo swore as she hopped to her feet. “After you,” Bo’s hand came to rest on the small of Lauren’s back, she smiled affably and eagerly followed her up the stairs.
