I can't watch the events in the Middle East at the moment and think that the past evils done on the Jewish population in Europe, including "collective guilt for the murder of Jesus" as the Jewish community were charged with during the many pogroms against them, has some how proved the old saying 'Violence begets violence ( Read more... )

...this can surely only end when all sides accept that a person is a person, an individual and no people are worth "more" than others.

*sigh* Now there's a big ask. Even bigger for the fact that most people believe they already do.

I saw one commentator from the Israeli peace camp writing, I can't remember who, about a visit by Israeli school students to Auschwitz. And when asked to write about their conclusions from it, about one quarter drew the conclusion that "we must make sure this never happens again to anyone", and three quarters that "we must make sure this never happens again to us".

Does seem pretty hopeless. Then again, as someone else I can't remember said, people can always be trusted to do the right and reasonable thing. Once they've tried everything else.

Yeah, I suppose you're right. Most people do believe they already respect others.
Like that fact from the school students too. I guess that sums it all up really.
