Who are you to judge that?

You're not in a mental institution, you have a sense of self. You have something, therefore you can't have nothing. Judgement doesn't come into it.

You forgot the ones that got drunk. And the ones that thought they were someone else entirely. And the ones that were nearly killed when they forgot their own abilities. And the ones that loudly pretended to have not forgotten at all. And the ones that took the opportunity to commit some very therapeutic murders.

I don't think this is a very good metaphor.

Because a larger identity has its uses but to rely on it solely will lead to blindspots. The sum of the parts are greater than the whole, but the strength of those parts are as individuals.

If you can't work individually, can't come up with new and different ideas, then the larger identity becomes weaker as a result.

The community identity is only as strong as its individuals'.

Without knowing who we are, that isn't enough. I suppose the best example is a man with Alzheimer's, both sides are in pain, but the patient doesn't quite know why.

It's probably why it's one of the more feared diseases.

Yeah, well. It's a good thing amnesia of this sort is rare unusual not generally widespread on this ship.
