I've made it. I got an email last night from the course coordinator of the Mechatronics program offering me a place. He explained that he had already transferred my degree to this but that he could change it back if I wanted. Obviously he received a hasty reply confirming that this wouldn't be required

Pretty much. For the uninitiated, Mechatronics is a combination of mechanical, electrical & software disciplines. A good example is that a mechanical engineer designs the brakes. A mechatronics engineer designs the ABS system. I'm hoping this will lead me into robotics & industrial automation. The short answer is that I get to play with cool toys & learn how to design my own.
