1. I'd like to say false, but it's probably true.

2. Funny you should mention Apocalypse Now, as there's a scene in the movie that I seem to recall where a whole bunch of civilians gets shot on a boat. Only one is alive and one of the soldiers asks if they could get medical attention for the civilian. Then Willard (epic badass) shoots the civilian. In my mind all I could think was "that bitch just got Spiers'ed."

3. We used crickets in sport at school. In Skip-style, I broke mine within minutes of getting it.

4. True. Very true. It's Kleenex time, methinks.

PS. Not sure if this should go under crack, but this is possibly my favourite cap of the episode:

I think they were just friends, but Winters makes it really clear in the book that he thought that friendship was just as important, and maybe more so, than anything and anyone else in his life. So I don't really know WHAT to do with it, even now. *shrugs*

Where do you get a toy cricket?

British toy stores? I assume they still sell them.

True, true, false, false. Especially that last one - Day of Days is improved when you can appreciate things like the dramatic irony of Buck being really surprised about Popeye getting hit in the ass. (Also when you can actually tell them all apart, which is impossible first time round.)

Also, little details and observations:

- This episode's DVD menu montage has a picture of a C-47, Bill with his gun, a map, a compass and some cartridges.
- There's this weird bit at the start: someone asking "Did Evans make it?", Meehan being told to go help him, Evans himself sitting there all spooked, and I'm not sure what's going on. It seems to be implying that Evans had some kind of freakout and nearly didn't board the plane, but I can't recall reading that and it seems a little odd to have this tiny scene for such minor characters, especially without any indication being given of it in the previous episode.
- That is Cobb who gets hit, isn't it? I can't pick out the guy's face. And if it is Cobb, they used a bit of dramatic license in putting ( ... )

It's improved, yeah, but emotionally I have a harder time with it--the first time through, they were just guys to me, but now I've got enough background to know just what they lose, and what that means to everyone else. *shrugs*

Then again, it's an explanation for why we don't see Evans again that makes it clear that it isn't just because he's been transferred out with Sobel. I think it was an effort to make sure that Evans wasn't tarred with the same "Easy guys hate Sobel" brush. Plus he was a prime character to give the freakout to, given that they're trying to portray the rest of the characters as Big Damn Heroes.

I suppose NCOs and officers must get to choose what weapon they carry, since some have rifles and some have Tommy guns.I'm not sure how it actually worked, but a lot of guys did supplement their weapons with personal favorites, so maybe it's a bit of that? That might be ( ... )
