Today I learned that power outages of various lengths are a weekly occurrence in the village. I have no plug in clocks so I have not noticed if this happens while I am away or when I sleep. The authorities blame it on sunspots or testing of electrical equipment, but the real reason is that there is not enough power for this area. That is why we are

Why do you need to bring more shoes and shirts from home? Can't you get shoes and shirts in your size there? There must be a tailor somewhere in town who could make some stuff for you.

Take good care of your Kindle! You don't want to be like the guy in that Twilight Zone episode, who finally had time to read all the books he wanted, but then his glasses broke.

Glad to hear you're keeping active. It can be too easy to fall into a rut of not really doing anything.

^All of this. My dad always got super-crazy-cheap tailor-made clothes when he was stationed over there for the Army. (He was usually in Korea, but I doubt China would be much different in that specific aspect.)

My sister has to do that same thing of leaving the country every once in a while for her visa (although I think at one point they made her leave for a month while the Indian consulate worked out some passport issues). She used it as an opportunity to take some awesome trips.

I need to ask some more of the expats if there are things that they would recommend. The Expats here are an odd sort. Sadly most of the Chinese engineers are not from this area either.

Korea DID have a lot of opportunities for things like that. There are a lot of similarities and differences. Some people DO take awesome trips while visa issues get sorted out. Not sure if I will be allowed that. I should know soon in the next couple of days though.

I might be able to find things in my size here.. or a tailor, but things are going to get busy starting this week. My partner with his schedule will not be able to even go to town. :/

I live, breath and die by that Kindle. It is my sanity. I love the books I have loaded on it. And it grows all the time.

Doing my best to keep my sanity. The lack of transportation and being far from anything is the hardest adjustment.

Great entry. Given the solitude of your existence there, you will definitely have an opportunity to hone and develop skills you normally would not at home. I love writing too especially when I'm on trips or away from home. Solitude and inaccessibility to time wasters like TV and Internet is a good recipe for producing interesting writing. Again, I am really enjoying your documentation of your journey. I also feel for you on missing home and not feeling certain about how long you will be there. Sounds like you are making the best of your situation.

These latest couple entries are fascinating. I completely recognize the drive to read constantly from my time in Peace Corps -- possibly that's the only reason I was able to complete Anna Karenina. So glad to hear you're keeping yourself focused on the opportunities even though the difficulties are there.
