I don't understand life. I almost got the shit beat out of me tonight by this guy who shoved his wife down onto the sidewalk. I yelled asshole after him after asking her if she was okay, and she ran over to him telling him that I was talking shit about him, and it was heart-breaking

I think you absolutely did the right thing, and I'm very proud of you for doing so. Sometimes the right thing is also the scariest and most dangerous and heart-breaking thing. That's really terrible to hear, but I know I wouldn't have been able to live with myself if I'd just watched it happen and walked away. You're a good person, man. ♥
