I have a Princess Anne braid! (non sequitur)

AFS camp tomorrow! "End of stay" (yeah, with another month thrown in for fun) get together at the beach, which would sound a lot more fun except that Salla went to the one for the year students last weekend and said there weren't any activities or anything - just a ton of foreign exchange students getting drunk and smoking while the adults made ( Read more... )

I know what he's talking about with the jaw thing. Your mouth is really part of the instrument. You want to drop your jaw and make sort of an 'o' shaped seal around the mouth peice with your lips. Your face will feel sort of long and your cheeks should be firm and flexed. I don't know if that makes any sense at all. My clarinet teacher explains it much better than I do. But the thing is, the embrouchre work you do takes time and practice to build up the muscles in your cheeks and lips. The more you play and think about your embouchure setup while you play, the more it will improve and the more natural it will start to feel. And you'll notice your tone improves a ton.

No, I know exactly what you're talking about. It makes me feel like I'm trying to play saxophone, which is kind of weird. The first (and only) time I got it right in the lesson, my playing actually got noticably louder and I think the tone did improve too. As of now I haven't practiced for three days (shame), but I swear I'm just about to get my clarinet out. Honest.

And I just have to say, Jamie, you're one of my favorite clarinet teachers I've had lessons from. And I can't wait for Wind Ensemble!

"a ton of foreign exchange students getting drunk and smoking while the adults made token protests from the sidelines."
This makes me sad. Was it that bad?
I need to play soccer more. I say that a lot. I wonder if I ever will do something about it.

It actually wasn't like that at all in my group. Though I wouldn't be surprised if it just went all over my head, I honestly didn't see a drop of alcohol the entire weekend. And, partly because of that, I did have a good time. I played frisbee in the Pacific ocean!

We're definitely doing barefoot soccer again when I get back. So who cares if there's snow on the ground? We can be hardcore, right?

I'm glad it wasn't that bad. It's easy when hanging out with our group to forget that there are people our age who insist on doing stupid things to themselves. Yet they do exist.
As for barefoot soccer... I spent one of the coolest weeks of my life about a year ago in Southern China playing soccer on the beach with random Japonese and European tourists for 6 hours every day. By the end of the week I was sunburned everywhere and my feet were completely torn up and bloody (I eventually had to wear socks). But it was totally worth it. So my point was that I'm in for barefoot soccer, regardless of temperature.
