My post-beach mood

I got sunburned and sick, but had a good time. Ocean kayaking is the second most incredibly amazing adrenaline-rush thing I've done here, and no matter what else could have happened, that made the whole three days worth it. The ferry was a novelty and pretty, though I got used to it distressingly quickly. Overall good ( Read more... )

That's... scary.

Well, at least they're just ignorant instead of malicious. And while ignorace is not good, I think that they seem to be relatively decent people so probably they don't deserve to lose too much of your respect.

... but "why doesn't the water fall off the sides?" Ouch, ow, ow ow.

Yeah, I guess. It's just so out of character, I don't get it.

What really hurts is that one was my host mom. Who also said carbon dating was complete BS made up by pretentious scientists. (Davíd agreed with that one too).

1. I love ocean kayaking. It's pretty darn scary though.

2. Wow. I pretty much agree with what Laura said, that they seem like decent people. Exchange isn't just about them teaching you...you get to teach them too! Callie, ambassador of America...I love it...

3. Guess what guess what 14 days yes I'm counting down the days until you get back...

It's easy for me hanging around with my friends to forget that there are ignorant, anti-gay people in the world. But somehow they still exist. I guess the tricky thing is trying to teach them (or at least just stand up for what you believe in) without doing the "I'm an American and we know everything and you're stupid" thing.
Sea kayaking sounds cool. I'm downhill skiing, so I understand adrenaline rush.
I'm kind of excited to 'meet' you. I mean I knew you a little before you left, but in the last 6 months I really got to know Brenna and Abbie and everyone. Plus I am curious about your Latin American adventures. But it won't be long.

I stand up for science, but I'm finding it perversely difficult to say anything when they drop comments about "oh, that's just disgusting" refering to gays. I don't really know how to argue things like that. And I feel sort of like it's a cultural thing and I shouldn't impose my values system on them when I'm a guest in their world.

I'm excited to 'meet' you too. I know exactly what you mean about that. And the internet's a really weird place, socially speaking. I'm sort of curious to see what people actually act like after 6 months. There's a lot of things that just don't get communicated this way.
