For some reason, this Yume icon is really damned funny to me again.

But, um, I have a question for those of you who've been self-taught Japanese: What have you used to learn it? Is it a website? A textbook? I'm just wondering because I've been havin' a jonesin' for trying to learn this language again. :3

You can find some pretty decent textbooks at Barnes & Noble or Borders or some other bookstore. :D
Watching videos in Japanese also helps a lot, especially with colloquial stuff. :3

A neat program I've found can be downloaded from byki.com. I only used the free trial ver., which is no doubt limited compared to the full thing, but it's amazing how quickly you can learn things from it xD. It's also waaaay cheaper than Rosetta Stone, and there's even a way to download specific content from people if you're looking for something less conventional.

Hell, I didn't even know that was Yume at first. o___o until a while ago.

I learned a bit of Japanese before I took classes in school. I suggest learning all your Hiragana and Katakana first. I think I mostly learned Japanese from watching anime. I mean, I was able to understand simple phrases.
Textbooks help me a lot. They give you sample sentences and grammar rules, etc. I recommend the one called Genki. My teacher has us use those.

I considered joining the group order, but I think I'm just gonna horde my money just in case one of the bands I like has a concert near me. 'Twas mightyyyy tempting, though.

I did most of my learning with textbooks. XD If you're going to learn Japanese in college, you'll probably be using Genki anyway so you'll probably purchase it at some point. It's a realllly good book (although romanizations like arigatoo really bother me) for learning to read and write, especially... a much cheaper grammar book that's been immensely helpful for me is Japanese Sentence Patterns for Effective Communication. Watch a lot of videos (subtitled or otherwise)... and I think what helped me a lot was reading manga in Japanese. As long as it's not a grown-up manga, you should be able to navigate with furigana and use a kanji dictionary online or on your HD to understand some of it.
