But spray starch is pretty awesome.

OH HELL YEAH. :D Saved me every time I have needed crisp Karate uniforms for a tournament (most are 100% cotton dammit).

Re cotton twill: STRETCH TWILL is your friend. The 100% cotton stuff, not so much. :/ *HATES 100% cotton (and 100% linen, while we are at it)*

Actually most of the bottomweights from joanns are a cotton-poly blend that if you rescue them from the dryer don't really need ironing, so even though they're not ever $2/yd I'm growing pretty fond of them (if I have a 40% off coupon). The stretch stuff I've dealt with doesn't come out of the dryer quite as happy for some reason.

In what can only be masochism, I've also made hakama from 100% linen too >_>;

ohhhh, Im seconding starch spray, it also helps when you iron hems down before sewing, some crap like satin does not want to fold and stay, when you starch it to death - IT STAYS!
