I have to admit I am totally baffled by this whole school spirit thing. It seems like a waste of time and money to bother with all these stupid events in the hopes that they raise morale or some shit. I'm there to learn (or out of legal obligation as in high school) and it doesn't matter to me that it's THIS school instead of THAT one as long as ( Read more... )

It's not like a "you have to participate with this" kind of thing. People do because they want to and they like their school.

Just because you don't want to, doesn't make it bad.

And as much as you might not care for it, they are character building events. Keeps kids doing more positive things instead of stupid ones, most of them have charity and department fundraisers. Those who organize and run these things are of the same as us that do AX and are valid resume additions for being not only responsible, but reliable employee.

You're within all your right not to care about it or do anything for it, but those that do participate aren't stupid.

I think the reason it's getting to me is my university is sending me emails every few days about new upcoming events. I don't think there's been a single day this term that has not had at least one event scheduled for it. In comparison I've only gotten 3 emails about academic deadlines (drop dates, winter registration)

And on top of this they're raising tuition :/

Tuition is rising everywhere and will be for a while until economy can finally recover and settle down a bit. Though, it will still raise because always increasing higher standard of living, etc...

School pride events are so common now that they might seem unneccessary and more of a cultural thing, but they actually are important.

I guess, it's just really frustrating when you get the email that Christian Club #3 at CSU is holding a free bbq! on the same day as the notice that your fees are going up 30% next term. :(

It's like people who get all emotionally involved in their chosen teams winning. Like depressed if they loose. I don't get that type of thing. Same with this school spirit stuff. Bah humbug!

Not sure if it's like this for all schools, but many universities still get a substantial amount of money from alumni donations. "School spirit"-type events are a way for the university to build a positive association in the minds of their student body, which correlates to more donations in the future.

tl;dr: Your school is brainwashing you to give them more money.
