Whoa, whoa! Are you suggesting that I rely on a trained professional with the proper tools to fix an electronics problem? Let's not be hasty here! Plus I don't even have a Cadillac, so that option's out. I like the idea of greeting people with a non-sequitur about the debated existence of said PS2 though.

Most of the ps2s have two lasers onboard. One for reading dvds and one for reading cds. Sometimes only one of these dies. If your ps2 is modded, let it be known that the burnt dvds / cds strain the lasers a lot more leading to early failure. They aren't something that can be fixed without new components etc.

Replacing lasers is a non trivial task :)
good luck

but in general pulling-stuff-apartness tactics, i usually follow the "undo every screw you can find and start pulling" technique. It usually works for me :)

I tried. Seriously, I know exactly what's wrong with it, the lasers are fine but the metal ribbon connecting to the power buttons is out of commission. I can't find the screws, and I don't know how hard I can pull before things start coming apart even more and making it worse.
