Rapid Prototyping!

You know what's awesome?

Rapid Prototyping is awesome.

For those who don't know, Rapid Prototyping is essentially 3-dimensional printing.  You create a 3D design in a computer program, whack that into your Rapid Prototyper, and you get to hold your creation in your hands.  It is essentially your science-fiction replicator.  And we already have ( Read more... )

I've used rapid prototyping. At joels architechure they have one for building 3d models of the cad designs they make on the computer. it's a little expensive though as the powder stuff they use is hard to make or something. But yeah you just get your models fom whatever 3d app you use and import it into their computer for printing. They also have a lazer printer that burns through sheets of wood but that is really for quick mock up models and stuff and doesn't produce detail. But yeah it's pretty cool to watch it print, there is a convenient glass panel on the top of both so you can watch it go.

ooooooh... so you can do it with wood too? that is also awesome.

I suppose I shoulda figured that it's the perfect tool for architects. Do they use it very often?

well, yeah for their model making in the studio workshops. some don't us it and some do, it's good for getting little detailed bits into the model. but not all assignments require detail and as it is more expensive than just cardboard and stuff like that not every one uses it. but it's still pretty neat.
