Yay-roupe!

I leave for Europe in a scant 6 days.

and I hardly even have an itinerary planned! I'm a little scared.

What little that has been planned is thus: Huw and I are flying out to Frankfurt on the 7th. We have 6 days of travel throughout four countries(/regions) of our choice (that is, 6 24 hour periods where we have free reign of the railways!), ( Read more... )

I thought about Estonia. Unfortunately it's a little out of our way, so I'm afraid we can't, really... What's the schedule of your course like, anyway? Any chance of coming out to Germany, or the UK even? There will be many people there these coming holidays.

paris:
the catacombes (GO THERE it is amazing. and cheap.)
asterix theme park
Fu bar (best and cheapest cocktails and shots ever)
louvre (of course)
disneyland (given)
versailles
sacre coer(sp?) (best views of paris, beware of tourist swindlers)
la fayette (even just for window shopping)
the opera house (oh my lord, it's beautiful)
tour eiffel (duh)

these are all the usual touristy places, but for good reason!

although, check the dates for the asterix theme park -- when we were there in feb, it was closed for the winter season.

So when you say you're visiting Benelux, it's the equivalent of having said you're visiting Europe (yes I know you did actually say that too). Which countries in Benelux are you visiting?

We're planning on visiting Amsterdam and Brussels. So we won't be going anywhere in Luxembourg, at least not for more than a day anyway. Unless people find reason to go to Luxembourg.

DON'T GO TO LUXEMBOURG

It's not very much fun, unless you plan on doing some tax-free banking. I did run into some 27-year-old English guy and his partner who were pretty cool, but I doubt he's still there.

I've already got a few. They're pretty sweet. It's just that it's expensive to get one for each place that we plan on visiting. Tourist bureaus should know quite a bit though.

lonley planet guides are average.. I have had more success with Lets Go! for USA and Asia so I suspect their europe ones may be crackin'

The lonley planet thorntree site has some interesting stuff...

I would kill for a bit of Loire Valley right about now... my fave france place is Carcassonne at twilight- its this crazy medieval walled city- very atmospheric.

have you see the film the dreamers? it might make you more excited about paris than, say, the da vinci code.

you are going to berlin, right? You must! go to the theatre and tell me about it :) Please see something at the Shaubuhne! http://www.schaubuehne.de/start/index.php Three sisters is on in November and could be awesome.

oh my god i am getting way to excited about someone elses holiday!!

haha, I'll see what we can arrange :)
There aren't any plans to go to Berlin yet, unfortunately, but it's really very flexible. I'd like to see it again, I loved it last time.

Actually, I've just found out that Huw has a "Europe on a Shoestring" lonely planet guide. Problem solved!
