Saving the world, and other impossible dreams...

You probably don't know, and wouldn't have guessed that my favorite class this semester is geology. Everything about it is perfect. My teacher, Don, is brilliant, opinionated, and sassy. He is one of those people that you just want to be your life mentor because he is smart, accomplished, and damn funny. The material itself is so interesting and ( Read more... )

yesss! i haven't seen all of "an inconvenient truth" but i went to a talk about global warming by this guy bill bradbury who is oregon's secretary of state and i guess an authority on the subject and it was really really interesting how some of the conflict in darfur has actually been caused by the fact that lake chad dried up and now they can't fish and are going hungry. it's insane. i've become really paranoid about turning off lights and unplugging stuff now too haha

Gore actually discusses that briefly in his film. It is just really enlightening to look at all the links between climate change and political violence. Many scholars ask, "Why Africa?" when looking at history of violence and the ability to democratize. I think the better question in this world will be "Where next?" When will resources become so scarce that the United States will be reduced to squabbling and brawling with other countries over things like water and food? I don't see that it is that far away.

It is hard for me to think about other issues because this seems like the most important issue, and the one that gives power to the others.

I wish Al Gore had been elected because of exactly what you're saying, but I really doubt he could have been re-elected because the choices he would make to better the environment would really hurt his chances at re-election.

With that said, you have to wonder what Al Gore could have done for the environment in four years.

Just the winter/spring we've had in the Northwest is enough to make you wonder how soon global warming will really start to screw things up. I realize that weird weather can happen sometimes, but the thought of global warming is definitely on my mind when I see it snowing on the last day of April.

I'm glad Standford is taking some action at least. Oxy is TERRIBLE about being eco-friendly. And our Environmental Action Coalition is really poorly led and therefore very shitty. I just joined that website.
I'm glad you're passionate about this too. I think if we get enough brilliant, educated young people to join the movement something can actually be done in the next 10 years.
