The life of a ghetto monk

There's a Buddha statue that's sat outside the front door of each of the different places I've lived in during the last four years. When I got home tonight after being out for an hour or so, it was gone.

My first reaction was to laugh, and then to feel a strange affection for the thief. Who was it? The tweaker neighbor? One of his many friends who ( Read more... )

Someone's just been dying for that statue to be stolen so he could use the reference to SSFWS, hasn't he?

And, although Phoenix, for you, is the epitome of the great places to live, just remember that your statue never got stolen in Chattanooga.

Reminds me fondly of the story I heard about a monk visiting another monastery and was shown their elaborate and beautiful altar setup. He spit on the statue of the Buddha. The abbot was incensed and went into a brief diatribe which I can't recall right now. The visiting monk replied with something to the effect of "Show me where the Buddha is not and I'll spit there."
