I think you would enjoy The Wind Up Bird Chronicle. It continues some of the same themes but in a modern situation with greater definitions in the characters.

I know! Everyone tells me how great it is and most people start with Wind Up Bird as their first MURAKAMI read too. I'll get to it soon!
