There is a longstanding tradition in our culture of making fun of rural or middle-American stereotypes. Consider the character Kleetus (sic?) from the Simpsons, or the Dukes of Hazzard, or Drew Carrey's mock-anthem to Ohio in his TV show.

But I can't help but think that the recent upswing in ridiculing the boonies and its denizens has coincided with the Red State/Blue State fake dichotomy of the last few years. Left-leaning dwellers in urban settings need to remind themselves of their cultural superiority, and thus ridicule what they perceive as a swathe of uneducated backwards middle Americans voting inexplicably for the opposition. To banish the demons of self-doubt, they reframe the enemy as too dumb/provincial/uneducated to know better. Thus the spate of particularly vicious fun-poking at middle or rural American culture that goes beyond the basal level that already existed in pop culture.
