I know it's really hard to abstain in a drinking culture -- but try to go a month. I found it to be a very eye-opening experience in general.

That does sound like a bit of a problem. Any non-essential substance probably needs to be got rid of for awhile if it starts to feel essential (sorry this contradicts my previous comment).
