My mom is pretty cool

I talked to my mom today, and she told me about a conversation she'd had this morning with her doctor. The doctor wanted to put her on a diet. She replied, "I used to be a body builder. Twenty years ago, I had 12% body fat. I've studied nutrition all my life. I've been through colon cancer, chemotherapy, radiation, and ecoli. If I'm a little ( Read more... )

Ha. That is funny. A body builder too? Wow.

There isn't a lot of evidence that diets work either.

Right, and it's just insulting. Putting someone on a diet implies that they know nothing about nutrition and are basically globbing junkfood into their mouths without understanding that it leads to weight gain. In reality, there are many factors involved, and few people these days fit that stereotype of the ignorant junk food eater confused about why they've gained weight.

Yeah, during my 20's she spent several hours in the gym every day, and was in amazing shape. Guys from my high school class hit on her (gross). She did study nutrition hardcore, too. I'd be SO annoyed. Hell, I'd be annoyed now if someone tried to put me on a diet. As if I don't know about all that and am just lolling through life stuffing myself with chips and soda.

Yep, it's not rocket science for most reasonably intelligent people, it's about eating less. The real issue is why can't people do that? I went through a phase of being really interested in the subject and that was what I concluded. And it does take a lot of work to do that which can be exhausting and not worth it. So your mom is right that quality of life has to be balanced up here.

Ok, I laughed about guys hitting on her! Sorry.

It's okay, I've come to terms with it. :P

But yeah, overall quality of life is what's most important. When she isn't obese, why worry about a few extra pounds at her age, as long as she's okay with herself?

People freak out a little too much about carrying a lil extra weight. I've read that it can be protective in middle & old age, somewhere. Apparently it helps to have some meat on your bones if you suffer a long and serious bout of illness. Your mum sounds like she's quite healthy for her age. And I read the part about your friends hitting on her in the past - haha :D:D:D hot mama!

Right. Who wants a skinny grandma anyway? It probably is healthier at a certain point to be a little overweight than underweight.

Haha, I want to be the kind of woman young guys will always hit on. :P (Just for the ego boost, not because I'd want to date them!)
