My favorite LOTR characters are Samwise Gamgee and Faramir. Sam showed real loyalty to Frodo and didn't try to steal the show for himself, and he had some great lines here and there.
Faramir also showed growth and struggle as he chose whether he'd go after the ring himself or risk his own life to defend the Fellowship.
