Character: Laura Cadman- call her Cadman. Really.
Abilities: Nothing superhuman here; Laura is athletic and capable- not to mention hell on wheels with anything that goes 'boom'- but you're lookin' to the wrong gal if you're hoping for something extraordinary. She's pretty damn kickass, if she does say so herself, but here's the thing about being relatively tiny; there's always somebody about two hundred pounds bigger ready to beat up on someone littler, and speed and technique don't mean shit when you're trying to arm wrestle someone who could throw you around like a rag doll.
...That's where the guns come in. 'Less those muscles are bullet proof, a good P90 can trump any weight class. Cadman may be tiny, but it she'll kick ass any way she can.
Cadman's also one smart cookie; maybe not evil genius level, but her degree in electronics and job history with the bomb squad goes a long way towards proving that the first person will get both a knuckle sandwich and an explanation of the etymology of the phrase while they're busy trying to pick themselves up off the ground.
She's an expert on bombs in both the theoretical and practical sense; she also has a knack for computers.
Flaws/weaknesses: Cadman's got a goddamn hard head; what her daddy didn't drum into her in childhood was fixed by years in the military, and she'll follow her commanding officer into hell and beyond... But once she's outta uniform, anyone who tries pushing her around is out of luck.
She's in possession of a smart mouth; she's never been good at keeping her opinions to herself, especially when it's fairly important she should be doing so.
In general, Cadman prefers to go it alone. However, she's loyal to a fault; once her trust and support is given, she will turn a blind eye to any faults people might have, and will back them through insanity and horror.
Cadman has a problem with poking at people; she likes knowing how everything works, always has, and this desire extends to the people in her life. She likes to get a sense of how the people around her handle things, and she pushes and prods at them until she understands. Beyond that, a lifetime as a military brat and then a USMC officer has instilled in her a strong urge to fuck with people when she gets bored. She writes it off as a product of her upbringing and surrounds; when you're deployed in boring-ass places and the shit hasn't hit the fan yet, there's nothing to do but fuck with each other.
Cadman gets along with men well, in general; however, men who condescend or try to take charge or order her around before she's decided they have earned that right stick in her craw. She's got somewhat of a chip on her shoulder about certain kinds of men, and can ignore common sense and truth to start something if she feels threatened or pushed around.
Cadman is also, truth be told, a bitch sometimes. When she feels cornered, she'll lash out verbally, regardless of who her target is.
She also has a a habit of acting and speaking before she thinks things through. She's far too impulsive, and functions better with someone there to act as the voice of reason to her impetus to action.
History/background: Laura is 33 years old, and the youngest of the four children in her family; her older siblings are all girls, to her father's vague disappointment. Henry had always wanted a son; it turned out Laura was that to him. They were extremely close, and her desire to join the Marines stems from the stories she heard all her life about his time in the Corps. Her childhood was spent largely with Henry; she played touch football with Henry and his friends every Saturday until she left for the Corps herself, and every morning they jogged five miles.
Cadman had always been smart, and never had any problems with her grades, but school was never her top priority. Practically before the ink dried on her diploma, she hightailed it to a recruiter's office and joined the Marines. All she really needed were grades good enough to get her into the Corps' officer training; after all, they only let the officers blow the best shit up.
While she and her sisters always got along well, Laura was always a bit of a mystery to them; it never harmed their relationships, but the three elder Cadman girls were never her chosen confidantes or playmates. Her relationship with her mother was- and is- more strained; Moira Lorraine Cadman doesn't understand why her daughter would rather risk her life on some dusty battlefield half a world away instead of staying at home where it was safer. Moira was born and raised in Georgia; she met Henry- and married him- two months before he left for Vietnam. She spent all Laura's life trying to instill Southern gentility in her as well as she had Laura's sisters, but it never really took.
Laura has always been a jock; she played sports nearly all her life. She started karate when she was ten, and finally earned her black belt in her junior year of high school. She was on her high school's track and soccer teams all four years of school. The record she set as a sophomore for the 100 yard dash is still unbroken. She is still more than slightly smug about that.
Cadman is a Lieutenant in the USMC, and she specializes in explosives. She has a degree in Electronics, as well, and worked as a bomb disposal expert, served in the Gulf War, and then was with the Secret Service for an unknown period of time before joining the SGC. She was stationed on Atlantis after the first Daedalus run came through, bringing new personnel, and requested to extend her stay after that; however, after the recall of the city by the Replicators, she did not return, instead staying at the SGC proper on Earth and heading up her own Gate team.
Personality: Laura's a daredevil and a thrill seeker, and often puts herself in situations more cautious- and/or sane- people would not dare. Still, she's a survivor, with a strong will to live; she puts herself in danger, but she's not the type for suicide runs.
She's absorbed the 'leave no man behind' ethos to a fault; Cadman will out everything on the line for someone she considers a friend, or a teammate; she's not the type to cut losses, or accept human collateral damage. She's of the opinion that if it's between getting just herself home at the risk of the team, she'd rather go down knowing she tried to do something than cut and run.
Cadman has a wicked sense of humor, a little on the bizarre side, but never absent. Laura Cadman would crack jokes as the world went down in flames around her. She also has absorbed the Marine habit of cussing a blue streak at the slightest provocation; like many Marines, she's firmly convinced no word cannot be improved by inserting 'fucking' somewhere in or around it.
(I think I went into her personality quite a bit up in her flaws category, as well, so there is another source up there.)
Background setting: General 21st century earth, with the twist of the Stargates existing, and all that implies. (The Wikipedia page for Stargate should answer any questions on that.)
