“Should we go down there?” Willow asked, facing her basement door. “I don’t think it’s healthy or normal for him to only come out for food, and never really be seen.” She set a tray of blood and cereal on the floor, and knocked on the door.

“What do you expect?” Giles questioned, glaring at her. “He and Xander are going through a nasty break up.” The man shook his head. “He’ll come out when he’s ready to face the world. You shouldn’t baby him.”

“I can hear you.” Spike growled, his disheveled figure appearing in the doorway. ‘You don’t have to talk about me. I don’t appreciate it.” He picked up the tray, and vanished back downstairs.

“Who knew Spike could take a breakup so hard?” Willow murmured. Giles glared at her.

“Woman, you must be daft. We’re talking about the man who kidnapped you for a love potion, aren’t we?” he asked. Willow blinked.

“Oh yeah! I forgot about that.” she commented. He gave her a horrified look.

“Yes, well, you make me wonder sometimes.” he murmured.

Spike lingered on Willow’s mind. What was he doing down there for hours? Was it really helping him work through his breakup?

“Spike?” she called, cautiously opening the basement door. “It’s Willow.” She flipped the light switch on.

“Need something?” he asked, standing up. She slowly moved down the stairs, not wanting to make any sudden movements.

“What are you doing here?” she asked, wrinkling her nose at the pungent scent of old whiskey. “I was worried about you.”

“Trying to get him out of my head.” he murmured. “Taste of him still lingers in my mouth.” He took a swig of whiskey and swished it in his mouth. “Takes every inch of what makes me tick to not chase after him.”

Willow sat on the lumpy cot that was set up in the corner of the basement. Beckoning him closer, she tried not to recoil at the sight of what the proud man had become. He sat down, not quite next to her.

“Xander’s probably just as lost.” she murmured. Spike chuckled sarcastically.

“Right. Leave the man in your bed for your pregnant vengeance demon bird.” he muttered bitterly. Willow cleared her throat.

“Well, it’s not an easy thing to hear. He wants to give his child the family life he never had.” Spike shot her a pained look.

“Doesn’t make it right.” he muttered. “We could have managed it together.” Willow slid her arm around his shoulder. He shoved it off.

“Xander doesn’t always think with his head. He thinks with his heart, and then uses his head later.” she murmured. He gestured to the crumpled paper resting on the floor.

“I’ve lapsed into bloody awful poetry.” he murmured. “I just miss him. Sleeping in his arms, just…”

“Everything?”

“Yeah,” he murmured. “Really do.” He bit his lip. “I’m never going to find anyone like him again.” Tears starting to pour from his eyes, he just sank straight into Willow’s arms. “I lost everything.”

“Spike…” She seemed to lose her words. All she could do was hold open her arms.

Finally, he allowed himself the comfort he so desperately deserved.
