It had been one of the boys’ ideas to take the whole group in a private beach resort owned by one of their wealthy parents (or so he claimed). Thus, it was compulsory for everyone to tag along, whether or not their parents and guardians permitted them. Alibis were then produced, all involving some fictitious thesis or phony “required” field trip for school. The girls were far better intellectuals than the boys and were in charge of all the excuses as credible-sounding and as sensible as possible.
There were no regrets when we arrived in the beach. The entire place was breath-taking. The boys hooted in appreciation while the more sanguine girls of the bunch ran towards the shore to feel the water on their tired feet. It took us a while to settle down in the little house we were to live in for the rest of the weekend. We all wanted to enjoy the beach first and there were room assignments to debate on. It was not surprising that I ended up on the couch in the end while a couple had a room to themselves.
“I came because they told me to take my mind off my family problems. As if I really cared about it in the first place,” One of the boys sat down beside me and gazed at the bonfire in front of us. I gave him a brief smile and a beer, and we clinked cans together while a joke cracked up the rest of the group.
He was basically a social pariah; a good student if he wished to be. Although other less deserving people tended to overshadow him a lot. He rolled his eyes at the others with us, partly to mask his amusement and partly to maintain his image. His expertise involved a proficient play with words, all involving the melancholy of life and how he visualized Armageddon… which he often wish would happen randomly. Everyone found him difficult to deal with, and he got a long with only a few of us. He was not an enigma as he claimed; with all the human emotions he was capable to feel, it was anger he often exhibited.
Wrath looked at everyone other than the group, in his mind was probably another end-of-the-world story but with the elaborate use of the English language to illustrate it in his head.
Yet another lewd inside joke was shared by the girl in the limelight and everyone including Wrath shared the hilarity with laughter. The girl in the spolight was courtly rambunctious, her boorish ways were pleasing to the eyes. Everyone found her lack of social graces as charming and adorable as her facial features. She often swore like a drunkard and fought like a frat boy. But everything that seemed wrong with her was painted beautifully by vainglory.
Wrath mumbled something under his breath and no one bothered to find out what it was.
“You little witch,” Pride’s boyfriend squeezed her shoulder playfully and placed his hand on her ankle.
I watched her boyfriend trace little loops on her bare foot while he kept his eye on Pride, engaging everyone with yet another story. I always knew what that gesture meant, and to put it quite simply it was: “Hurry up and blow me now”. Pride was still dignified enough to keep the attention of the others fixated at her until before bed time, after which she would then have her boyfriend, Lust’s, undivided attention all to herself.
“Oh geez, I ran out.” Lust discarded the empty can into a pile of garbage nearby.
“Here’s more beer.”
His eyes strayed towards another girl in the group, the one who had spoken up quite suddenly. Lust stared at her longer than needed and everyone failed to notice. Except me and another girl whose burning eyes caught every move Lust made.
“Don’t forget to take the trash with you before you go to bed,” another one of my friends told Gluttony “I don’t want any litter in my folks' private beach”. She nodded and sipped contentedly on her beer, her fifth can that hour. Gluttony took a tape measure out of her bag and wrapped it around her waist. Grimacing, she stood up and excused herself from the group. Lust’s eyeballs were caught staring directly at her neckline and then to the thin hems of her white skirt. Gluttony’s underwear was showing through her clothing.
Pride’s beauty was in no comparison to this girl who was once the butt of many overweight jokes during our grade school years. She wore more makeup than her mentor, Pride, and donned clothes that would shock anyone’s mother. It had been a habit of hers to take laxatives and throw up after every meal. Gluttony couldn’t stop eating. She found a way to keep her voluptuous figure without moderating her food intake. Now, she unknowingly instigated Lust to desire new skin.
The girl with burning eyes was Lust’s ex-girlfriend. She was the newest addition to the group. A transferee from a convent school for girls; her parents thought it would be best for her to stay in a coed school of higher caliber. She told us that she was caught making out with a famous classmate-actress and was taken to a coed school to keep her straight. We soon found out that she actually won a scholarship in our school and lied about the lesbian rumor just to become popular. It was also partly her fault Lust had to break up with her; the other part being caused by Lust himself. He was in a mission, to find “true love” and that mission involved a change of love interest as often as a change of clothes. They both insist that they are over each other but their actions proved otherwise. Lust allowed his ex-girlfriend to resent his newer and prettier catch. Of course, Envy was more than furious.
Another incoherent mutter from Wrath was overpowered by the son of the said-owners of the beach. It was his turn for the spotlight now, and his name was Greed.
Greed was an average boy. He was rather boring and lead a monotonous life with his silly model kits and his almost obsolete laptop. He wasn’t admitting it but his parents actually had to work double jobs just to keep him in a good school such as ours. He didn’t have the money to afford his luxurious hobby but he was cunning. He sold his test answers, copies of his notes and homework and he had commissioned work doing other people’s laboratory projects. Not only that, he sold papers, pens, rulers and scissors to classmates who more often than not, forget to bring their supplies when they are most needed. The class jocks even respect him, he was after all, the reason they continue being in the varsity team despite their grades. Greed wasn’t all that bad, just a little money-obsessed and boring.
I eyed a bag of chips from Greed’s bag and took it without him noticing. Greed was laughing without restraints; his amusement gratified both Pride and himself. He wanted attention too and the pair was unstoppable once they start a group discussion with only the two of them doing the talking. Envy wasn’t interested in mentally decapitating Lust anymore but glared at Pride’s back as she practically rolled on the sand while laughing. Her perfectly straight hair was covered with sand and still she looked stunning. That was probably what Envy was mulling over.
Without me knowing it, an argument broke out within the group and Lust ran back to the house with Envy chasing after him. Pride, being herself, rolled her eyes and helped the grumbling Greed pick the trash up. They left after a few minutes.
“This is getting a little redundant, isn’t it?” Wrath remarked. “They do this all the time. Lust and Pride will be back together in no time.”
I yawned and nodded, watching the color of the sky turn darker by the minute. It looked like it was past midnight.
“Did you notice? Lust was looking at you strangely.” He said in a tone I wasn’t familiar with. “He started doing it when Gluttony left… I don’t like it.” The last few words sounded threatening.
I told him I didn’t know what he was talking about. He kept silent even if I felt there was something else he wanted to say. I didn’t want to push it further and he kept me company until the bonfire died a few hours later.
One more day at the beach. Whatever happens tomorrow isn’t any of my concern… just like everything else. After all, I wasn’t named Sloth for nothing.

A/N: I did this story before Now Let Me Get This Straight and forgot about it afterwards. I was inspired by Neil Gaiman and Full Metal Alchemist while saving
sarj_hoshino a slot for the book signing.
kikiam and I had a lively discussion about FMA and the ideas were just unstoppable.
I should really get out of the box and write something beautiful without mentioning sex XD
