[tutorial] Making smooth, good quality animated icons

Oct 09, 2009 07:47

This is pretty much my first tutorial, sort of. Definitely my first animated icon tutorial. I decided to make an easy-to-follow tut because I can't count the amount of times I'd searched around for tutorials on how to make animated images, only to discover nothing made any sense or I got lost along the way because the instructions were so confusing ( Read more... )

Do you have Photoshop? ImageReady usually comes with it!

Oh man, that SUCKS. Wth, Adobe.

I've done some looking around, though, and I found a pretty good tutorial on making animations in CS3: here. There is another good one here, too.

Holy tutorial, batman. I always wanted to know how to make animated icons but was too lazy to go and find a good tutorial. I have CS3, so no ImageReady, but I think I've got CS1 lying around somewhere, so as soon as I find it, it'll be your fault and your fault alone if the entirety of Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords ends up iconized.

There's a great tut for CS3 animations here! Not my tut and I don't have CS3, but it might be helpful to you. Otherwise, dig out CS1, wherever it may be, and give my tut a whirl - I'll be glad to take the blame for you making animated icons. *g*

I've been looking for a tut like this all my life! Really.
I have just one question, maybe I didn't read well, but in which step you explain how to delete frames when the icon is too big? That's always been a problem.
Thanks!

I talk about deleting in step two and twelve, and I mention it here, too: I did this by selecting the very first frame, holding the shift button down and selecting the 25th frame. This highlights all 25 frames I wish to get rid of. I then click the trash can button on the bottom of the Animation box and delete those frames.

I hope that helps! ♥

Oh ok, what I actually meant was how do I know which ones to delete, but I guess one only knows while making it, by seeing every frame, and then get rid off the ones you don't need, well at least that's how I think it is, if that makes sense.
Anyway, thank you for writing this tut. It is very helpful =)

Oh, I get you! Sorry I misunderstood. Yes, the frames you end up deleting are up to you. The best way to do it, if you're not sure, is to delete slowly. Meaning, only delete a couple of frames at a time so you can see how it looks as you decrease the number of frames. Each time you delete, hit the 'optimise to file size option:

Oh. My. GOD! This is exactly what I needed!
I've only made one animated icon before and it was an absolute fail!
I will definitely be using this. Thank you so much!

Yay, you're welcome! If you do end up using this tut, come back and show me the outcome! I'd love to see it. ♥

*happy flails*

This is so awesome! Am so meming this.
I've sort of attempted to make an animation in the past, but my brain quickly broke.
This was very easy to understand and think my brain may survive after all. :D
And yeah, image heavy, but thank you so much for taking the time to screencap all of that. It's so much easier for me to follow things when seeing how it's done, not just reading written instructions.
