I am thinking of buying a used bike on Craigslist... does anyone have any advice for what to look for? There are a couple listed that say "Women's Schwinn" that look good, but I have not had a bike since about 1983 so am not sure what height or size or features I need. I guess I am pretty tall (5'7) and have a large frame, so should I get a men's ( Read more... )

You don't necessarily need a men's bike. 5'7 isn't THAT unusally tall for a lady.

I say you go to a nice bike store. They will give you some pointers on the right size frame for you. Thank them nicely and tell them you are going to think about it. Then use your new-found knowledge to purchase a used one on CraigsList!

Oh I should also add (and of course we can talk about this in person) that if you haven't ridden for a long time and you think you just want a nice recreational bike, I'd maybe not go for a road bike. A hybrid or commuter bike is all you need. You can always upgrade later if you get really into it!

Richardson Bike Mart rents bikes and sells pre-owned bikes as well... I think I may go there and rent one to try it out. But yeah, definitely a recreational bike is what I want... I don't plan to be riding up the sides of mountains or anything.

At least got to RBM to find out what size bike you need. The people that work there are very friendly & helpful. I'd recommend going to the one in Richardson for this particular need. The people at the location by the lake are a little, um, gruffer. I never feel as comfortable there.

Yay! I would love to have friends to ride bikes with-I second Richardson bike mart for advice (don't pass out at the prices). Jason bought me my bike for Christmas after I begged for one, if you ever want to try it out just come over and take it out for a spin! Comfortable and easy to ride. It's a Diamondback but beyond that I would have a hard time saying what type it is-that is the drawback to not purchasing it myself I'm afraid and I've never taken the time to get further into it though I would love to...There's something about rolling along past nice scenery and listening to my tunes that is awesome.

i always preferred a man's bike, myself, but i think that's because i was really into bike riding as a hating-that-i-was-female teen. also, the one ladies' bike i ever had always seemed to have flat tires, but maybe that was more a problem with the tires than the bike. i've got a 32" inseam so i always went for a large bike, but here's a link about size correlations: http://www.grouptrails.com/bike_size.htm

I think the advice you should take from this is that it really isn't a man vs woman bike issue - it is more of a comfort issue. I've had both and they have been comfortable for different reasons (one time I had a purely "Man's bike" it was simply because I liked how it looked ( ... )
