The Dentist

I had the awesomest session with The Dentist today. I love my dentist, mostly because he told me that, when he was growing up in Israel, he had a pet cockroach that he kept on a leash. Today, I had to get a filling done. The nice thing was that his wife and his daughter were there too, and he sort of had to struggle between filling my poor tooth ( Read more... )

I think the usual suspect for mad amounts of sugar is pop of various kinds.. just cuz, you know, it has a fuck-ton of sugar in it. Another possible suspect might be coffee/tea if you take it with sugar. Or eat anything, really, since almost anything we eat seems laced with sugar in one way or another e_e..
then again, I have no idea what your eating habits are :P I cut my pop intake down to like, 2 cans a week, as opposed to my former 1-2 a day..

Congrats on the reduction in pop intake! It's crazy the amount of sugar in that stuff. Which reminds me of this funny Italian girl who was studying with me in Russia. She looks at the food available and orders the absolutely blandest dish of rice & corn. She turns to me and explains that she's trying to lose weight. And then she takes a 500mL bottle of (non-diet) Pepsi. *hits forehead*
I only drink pop about once a month and I don't put sugar in my tea... Maybe I could stop drinking hot chocolate though. But it's sooo good. Hum. Maybe I could just try reducing the amount of sugar I put in it until it becomes a mixture of only cocoa and milk... Lecker!
The "not eating anything" sounds like a good start though.

it's better to eat fats than sugars, you're saying? hmm. Anyway sugar ain't that great. Just enjoy spices more.

Yes, that is what I am saying, but I only think it to a certain degree. I wrote that to prevent friends from fearing an attempt at weightloss The thing is that I know I eat too much refined sugar and that it plays havoc with my blood sugar levels and my teeth. I don't think I eat too much fat. Unless it's fried tofu. And as for spices, you're preaching to the choir. You should come and visit my spice pantry one of these days. But yes. Spices and such. Oranges with orange blossom water rock. But it can't ever replace sugar pie.

Any spice pantry that can be "visited" per se is awesome. I gotta go to bed and invigilate an exam tomorrow.

No worries I won't freak out as long as you continue to have that great rump of yours.

Hmmm cutting out refined sugars is hard. According to some sources about sugar reduction, the hardest part of cutting down sugar is in the initial stages. Sugar has an addictive quality to it, once you have some, your body is waiting for you to get another fix. If you are able to cut out sugar for a couple of days and remain strong, your carving for sugar will decline and it will get better.

14!

Well, 14 is my top estimate. I know I have at least 12. That's what happens when you forget to go to the dentist for three years.

substitute sugar by pure honey (it might be hard to come by around here) - why u need pure, because some sorts of "honey" produced by feeding bees sugary liquids, and you want to avoid that.

what the hell are "supplemental fluoride" and "dental sealants"??

funny thing though... i have the opposite problem: i am trying to find smthing sweet that tastes good. for example, i hate sugar, the hot chocolate i tried at coffee shops, the instant hot chocolate, chocolate bars make me puke, most cakes in stores, and home-made stuff is hard to make... how about this for a cutting down on sugar strategy: every time you eat sweets, set the equal amount aside for me. then when we meet, you will give me the box with all kinds of yummy stuff. that way every time you eat sweets, you will be alerted twice: when you eat and when you set stuff aside for me. plus your greed will work for you.

Supplemental fluoride: not sure. I think it's just a fluoride solution your dentist gives you so you can use it in between visits.
Dental sealants: it's a material added to your molars when the fissures are too deep (which puts you at higher risk of getting cavities)

It sounds like a potential good idea, except that we don't see each other that often and that the cakes and cookies and brownies and chocolate croissants and and and, well, they wouldn't be good anymore.
