"Why the long face, cutie?" Matthew walked...no...snuck up behind me on that fateful day. I remember staring out as the waves broke gently over shell-less, rock-less, life-less sand, trying not to cry

Are you asking what's missing? Well, I'm assuming there would be context as to why the character would mentally collapse like that presented to the reader before, other than that though, I'm at a loss. It is very well written! :)
No. "What's Missing" was the LJ-Idol prompt for Second-Chance Idol, Week 1.
This isn't a character. It's a very true event, culled from my own memories. It wasn't a piece about collapse...and obviously what's missing goes well beyond the salt of the sea. ;)

D'oh! I see now that I've reread it with that in mind. Well,I said it was well written, not that I'm a good reader(apparently not any more!) Wow **blushes** I'm a ...I'ma...I'm going to get my ass down to the local library, get a card, and get myself a paper book with fiction in it today!
LOL! If you click on the tag titled "marriage, the first", you'll see lots of entries from the past. This was just another flashback. Although many of those tagged entries were while I was in it, so to speak.
I've only ever had a vacation...once...2 years ago, for only a few days to see my aunt in MA. She was about an hour from Hampton Beach, so we went...it was AMAZING!!!!! I experienced EVERYTHING you just described, especially here: "He had never, at least, not that I knew of (or could imagine), showered after a day on the beach and reveled in the tautness of his skin that can only be achieved with sea salt and oceanic winds." My skin was so clear for several days after just one day at the beach. Being in it was incredible; it is it's own being. I had gotten out of an awful relationship myself, and before going had been to the store and found a rose quarts on leather string - huge chunk, wore it in with me just to symbolize the cleansing that much more. You're right, NOTHING is like the ocean.
Thank you so much for sharing this! :) I'm fortunate - I'm about a 10 minute drive (less if there's no traffic) from Revere Beach in Boston Metro. If I don't have my car, I can take the T. Our back porch faces directly due east as well and since we're actually only a mile and a half as the crow flies from the water, most days bring fresh scents from the sea to our home.
Hopefully you'll be able to come back and experience it again. :)
