Remember at the end the prince cannot go back to his planet until the snake bites him, because he says to the narrator that his body is too heavy, and not to be sad about an old shell if it disappears. Not taking the fox allows for the demonstration of love as choice, upon which you freely accept all consequences, even the painful ones. And besides that, the rose would have been terribly jealous of the fox and he of her. However would the prince balance those two out!

But yeah, the romantic in me wishes he could have taken the fox too, and found a way to make it all work.
