Im in Iceland
Alright, it took me about 10 minutes to find the update button since livejournal here is in icelandic. This trip has been traumatic and absolutely fantastic. I´ll give a more thorough update when I´m not spending 100 Kronar for 20 minutes of air time. I got here, took out money, paid for my hostel with that money, and then BOOM. Credit card a no go. Turns out bank of america had put a BLOCK on it, since due to "new security measures" that they didnt tell me about, if you dont tell the company youre going to another country they just assume someone stole it and promptly block it. Well, that´s a problem when you have NO money to make a phone call to fix it, and you have to rely on shitty wireless connection to email your mom in a panic to do something. So for two days, all I had to eat was a twix bar and I had to drink sulphuric Icelandic water in order not to die. Then it started blizzarding while I was walking into town. HORIZONTAL blizzarding. My legs were so wet, my pants were literally frozen. I tried going to a bank for help, but they couldnt understand me and I couldnt understand them. This woman just kept pointing to this receipt saying "It not work! It not work!" In reference to my card. I left and just started bawling. I was hungry, cold, and surronded by beautiful viking men I couldn´t speak to.
Then suddenly, the snow stopped. I tried my card at the 97430th ATM and it magically worked. Turns out my mom got the block off somehow. I ate an entire BOWL of fish and chips. I have never been so relieved in my life. I´m leaving out a bunch of details, but briefly:
I HATE people who go to other countriesöcities and then claim they saw the celebrity that countryöcity is famous for. This is because 1. I never believe them and 2. Even if I kinda believe them, deep down I really don´t. But I swear to God this is true. I saw Björk. I was crossing the street in downtown Rekjavik when this old lady starts pointing at my shoes and shouting at them in Icelandic. I don´t know what about them angered her so, but she proceeded to follow me and yell at them wheil I apologized in English and tried to get away, but she was like a yappy schnauzer and just would not leave me alone. SO while this crazy Icelandic woman is giving my shoes the one two, I see this big group of beautiful Icelandic men walking up. I notice in the middle this tiny little girl with a big green shawl thing and a white plastic flower in her hair, talking with frenetic hand gestures. I thought to myself 1. Those boys are hot and then 2. That girl looks just like Björk! Then, as the yippy crazy lady continued her Icelandic tirade, the group slows and stares at me and my "pet" and I realize, holy fuck, it IS Björk! I knew it for certain when I saw all these people following them from behind, this one American girl I remembered from the hostel being so brave as to take a picture. It was so shocking. Little Björk, just walking along. I knew she was in town because tomorrow she´´s playing with Sigur Ros and Mum at this huge concert (which sadly I cant go to because I have to go back to England Saturday to make my flight to Italy on Sunday) but I didn´t think Í´d actually come to Iceland and see her. Later, I was walking by this little cafe that was in a basement that had windows so you could see into it, and low and behold, there was Björk again, surrounded by her beautiful Nordic men at a table in the corner. It was so cool. Anyway, sorry to rant like this, I really hate people who get all excited about celebrity sightings, but this was Björk, in Iceland, and she looked at me and my pet crazy woman. I bet she knew what she was saying about my shoes, too...
