There are several different kinds of lentils: French/Vietnamese (Puy) lentils which are very small and dark green, standard browny-green lentils, yellow lentils and red lentils which come from Egypt. You can make a standared lentil soup out of them - they tend to cook to a softer, more pureéd consistency unlike their counterparts.

Also, most versions of the soup (which is otherwise flavored similarly to normal lentil soup) contain tomatoes.
