Have I mentioned that I'm making my own costumes for Bearvillities this year (well, except for one piece)? Not half-assed, "let's take this pre-made thing and make it sparkly" costumes but "Let's take this bolt of fabric and make something awesome out of it" costumes. I'm doing this because A) I want to do it, B) I'm weird about cartoon character ( Read more... )

I used to do costuming, and still like to sew. I was with the SCA so it was all psudo-period stuff.

I also made a few teddy bears. 3 things about sewing fake fur 1) cut with a razor blade or exacto from the back. 2) Use tape to hold the fur away from the edge while you sew. 3) Trim the fur short along the seam your working on.

Pleates - they make a machine for those. But, if you take a ruler and tailors chalk, mark them then take and iron, and press each one as you fold at the chalk marks, it helps, as do pins but, yea..they are a bitch.

One scary thing to think about. Before the modern fabric that some with the sequins already sewn on, they all had to be put on by hand, one at a time.

I'm just about done with the fake fur, and really? The thing has to last about 10 minutes. After that it can explode for all I care. :D

As for the rest, it's not so bad. I did the pinning for them and they turned out all right for what I need from them.

FORTUNATELY, I'm not doing a damn thing with sequins or beads, just rhinestones and glue. I would kill myself first.
