Today two 14 year old girls came into the shop I work at and spent a good 25 minutes stuffing their bags with everything they could possibly hold, then tried to leave. I asked very sweetly if I could please check their bags before they left, and the first one broke down into hysterical apologies while the second shrugged like it aint no thang and

It's weird how I was probably only JUST less surprised than they were, I didn't actually expect the bags to be full of shit and even less did I expect the kid to break down when all I did was say "'Scuse me darl, can I check your bag please

I think your manager doesn't realise how you being nice may have affected those two. A bit of compassion is sometimes all one needs.

I agree on that but a couple of 14 year olds probably aren't going to appreciate compassion the way that people who have truly been fucked over would.

They might just think I'm a complete pushover and come around on my next shift to steal shit.
