Character Name: Etna
Series: Disgaea (specifically post Disgaea 2)
Gender: Female
Age: 1473
Species: Demon
Appearance: When you think of a demon lord, images of Etna are probably the furthest thing from your mind. Etna is fairly short, only about 4’10”, and looks to be around 14, but she does have pointed ears, tiny, stereotypical demon wings and a spade tail in a dark purple. She is thin and very flat-chested, though pointing that out in her presence is a terrible idea. Her maroon hair is drawn up into two pigtails with her bangs framing a round face. Her eyes the same color as her hair with catlike pupils-fitting, considering the catlike smile she tends to be sporting.

Despite her… lack of features, Etna tends to dress in extremely skimpy-what she considers sexy--clothing. If you can call it clothing. Her top is more of a bra or a bikini than anything else, with the parts that cover what little breasts she has form a sort-of heart shape. Her black skirt, already barely covering where it counts, has a slit up the side, showing off more of her legs. Luckily, her black boots manage to cover up a little more skin, ending around mid-thigh. Equally black gloves end in belts around halfway up her upper arm. Completing the ensemble are a host of accessories, including dark red bangles with black studs around her wrists and ankles, a pair of skull-shaped earrings, a black collar with a metal ring, and a white belt with pouches shaped like prinnies (think blue penguins) on the back.

Personality: Through most of her life and even now, Etna only had undying loyalty to one man, and that man is now dead. Suffice to say, everyone else is fair game. Conniving, traitorous, and narcissistic, she’s a demon’s demon if there ever was one. She’s a hell of a schemer, able to come up with things on the fly and form together a plan right under the nose of whoever thinks they’re in charge. A moment’s slip of attention can lead to a knife in the back or a prinnysplosion to the head. She can lie to your face with a sickly sweet smile, doesn’t care about anyone but herself, and can and will destroy you in a second.

…Or, at least, that’s how she likes to come off.

Make no mistake, Etna is a damn good schemer, and can be ruthless, but most of how she acts is a tough-guy front, and even then she spends most of her time teasing and poking at people than actually threatening physical violence (but will go from zero to pissed in a second if someone mentions a certain lack in the breast department). She’s generally pretty laid back (read: lazy) and would rather get one of her prinnies to do something for her than do it herself (although there aren’t any here, so it’d probably come down to trying to trick someone else in the city to do it for her).

While she likes to pretend that nothing can get to her, nothing could be further from the truth. She cares about people more than she likes to say, and while she won’t flat out tell someone she’s helping them out, she’ll point out things subtly and kind of push them in the right direction if needed. If someone she likes is in danger, Etna will be one of the first to pick up a weapon and lay the smackdown on them, worrying all the while. And, as much as she’d like to say she’s ruthless, Disgaea 2 kind of… knocks that over and stomps on it. She gives Adell and Rozalin an epic number of chances to leave and doesn’t really get violent until she’s called flat. She even chats them up from time to time, tries to get them into one of her schemes, and, once she defeats Zenon, stops by Adell’s house to tell him the good news. From what I can tell, unless you really get on her bad side, you’re not in any immediate danger. At all. Unless you’re a prinny, but then you’re the token series buttmonkey, so hey.

She doesn’t really understand that much about the emotions she has and is more likely to shove them down or hide them away than anything else. She hates being seen as weak and will shove away anyone who sees her having an emotional moment. On a similar note, she has a nasty temper and can hold a mean grudge.

Also, Etna has a bit of a heroine thing going on. Not, like, the heroic type (she gets annoyed when she has a Big Damn Heroes moment in Disgaea 2), but the main female character of a series type. This tends to manifest in a rather silly way in the games by way of her “Next Time” segments, where she’s supposed to describe what’s going on in the next chapter of the game, but pretty much ends up parodying different anime next times with her as the main character while everyone else wonders what she’s been smoking. Except Flonne, who seems to kind of get into it, but that’s Flonne.

She also likes sweets.

History: When she was a little girl, Etna became a servant in Overlord Krichevskoy’s castle. It was an unheard of event, as she was only a commoner, and she was constantly harassed by older, noble demons. Eventually, the harassment went too far, and a group of the noble demons killed her dog. As she stood over her dead pet, desperately trying to hide how it had saddened her, the Overlord appeared and offered to help her bury her pet. When Etna asked him why he had done such a thing, he, in turn, asked her if she thought nobles and commoners, and even angels and demons, should be treated any differently. He believed in a world where everyone would be treated equally, and strove to make that world a reality. While Etna didn’t entirely understand this goal, she was touched by the kindness she had received (and also didn’t quite understand), and vowed to help Krichevskoy make the Netherworld a better place.

As the years went by, Etna saw many things. The king became infatuated with and eventually married a human woman. Etna hated the woman, having had a crush on the Overlord, and it would take her a lot of time before she could ever bring herself to stop hating her. On the same note, Etna had a strong dislike for the king’s son, Laharl, as well. He was a symbol of their love, and, to Etna, just another reminder that the king had been in love with a human woman. But, she kept it all inside and remained as loyal a vassal as always.

More years passed. The queen died, Laharl rejected his mother’s ideas of love and goodness, and after a period of mourning, life went on. Until one day Krichevskoy approached Etna and had her make a promise: if he died, he wanted Etna to watch over Laharl and make sure he would grow up to become a magnificent Overlord. Etna was hesitant and confused, but she agreed, and later the king left to defeat an invading Overlord from an alternate netherworld, Tyrant Overlord Baal. He returned to the castle weakened and on the edge of death. Etna made an attempt to revive him, but Krichevskoy stopped her, making her promise, once again, to watch over Laharl for him. She agreed and Krichevskoy died.

It would be said that he choked to death on a black pretzel. Or meat bun. Depends on who you ask.

Not long after the king’s death, one of his former vassals, Maderas-fired due to favorite food theft-stole Etna’s memories of the king and ordered her to poison Laharl, his intention to usurp the position of Overlord. Etna agreed in order to regain her memories, but she always remembered her loyalty to the late king.

Two years later, Disgaea happens. Laharl wakes up from his two-year nap after Etna’s brutal maiming attempts attempts to wake him up. Laharl aims for the throne and Etna decides to go along. Etna joins the party. They meet Vyers, name him Mid-Boss, and beat the ever loving crap out of him, and carry on with life. Eventually, an angel trainee assassin, everyone’s favorite Love Freak, Flonne, pops up out of nowhere (like a ninja, nin nin), says she’s an assassin, and pisses off Laharl who runs after her. Flonne joins the party.

After awhile, the prinnies’ payday comes along and so the trio (well… Laharl and Etna) decide to raid someone else’s castle. Soon turns out the castle belongs to Hoggmeiser’s-another former vassal. He’s been yoinking stuff from the castle and selling it, including a giant portrait of the king. Etna decides to steal it and stash it in her room. Eventually Hoggmeiser gets beaten up, Flonne witnesses a hint of kindness from Laharl, though that’s not really that important to Etna.

Another chapter is gone through (that is more Laharl and Flonne based than anything else) and then we have the decisive Etna chapter. An embarrassing photo of Laharl is sent to the castle along with an ultimatum stating that Laharl should challenge this blackmailer if he doesn’t want the photos spread throughout the entire Netherworld. Laharl accepts and goes after the blackmailer, only to be confronted by his worst enemies…

Optimism and boobs.

Turns out the blackmailer is Maderas, who managed to weasel out that info from Etna. Laharl is pissed at Etna, and Maderas decides he’s going to kill Etna because he doesn’t need Etna anymore, but the trio continues onward. The three seem to be in a bind with boobs and optimism (and ~*ETERNAL LOVE*~) bearing down on them, until suddenly Vyers appears out of nowhere! He gives a rousing speech about using one’s mind’s eye to see past illusions (and boobs) but no one understands him so he just tells Laharl to close his eyes and plug his ears.

This works wonders, and Etna takes her chance, turns the prinnies against Maderas, and launches an attack on him that makes him wish that she was never born. After the fight, she decides to spare Maderas and starts getting her memories back. She and Laharl actually reconcile and the two actually begin to grow close.

After a well-done plan, Laharl becomes Overlord and Etna sets about to making him act like one, using a servant of hers, Aramis. Laharl helps him find his zombie pets, though he isn’t happy about it, and Etna tells Flonne about her dog and the Overlord.

Then, in Chapter 8 (sob), she lets Flonne know about Laharl’s history (and it’s impliedish that she’s forgiven Laharl’s mother by this time) and Laharl’s mother, who has been a pink prinny most of this time, goes to the red moon to be reborn. Laharl comes to terms with his mother’s death.

Captain Gordon, Defender of Earth!, Jennifer, and Thursday join the party and everyone has a picnic. After that the Earth Defense Force (EDF) invades. The Trio and Defenders go after the EDF, who kidnap Jennifer and take her aboard the Battleship Gargantua. Everyone follows and beats up Gordon’s rival and the leader of the EDF, General Carter… BUT WAIT, THERE ARE ANGELS IN THEM THAR HILLS.

Turns out Archangel Doucheypants Vulcanus, was behind the invasion. But no one knows that and they think it’s the Seraph so everyone decides to go to Celestia to ask him wth is going on. Vulcanus is confronted and Flonne gives a kick-ass speech to him about how he needs to get rid of the hate in his heart. Then everyone kicks his ass and goes to the Seraph.

The Seraph says that he did send Flonne to assassinate the king and then punishes Vulcanus for being a douche. However, Flonne needs to be punished too, since she harmed fellow angels, and so she is turned into a flower. Laharl, seeing this, gets incredibly angry and attacks the Seraph, beating him into a pulp, but stopping before he does too much damage. Realizing that violence won’t bring Flonne back, he gets ready to sacrifice himself for her. Etna tries to stop him but it’s Vyers that manages to do the trick, telling Laharl that he really doesn’t need to do that and Flonne’s just going to come back in about two seconds anyway. It was more a secret test of character than anything else SURPRISE. Everyone is confused but happy, and Vyers flies off with Laharl’s mom.

THREE YEARS AND A FEW CAMEOS/KNIFE-PILLOW SMOTHERINGS LATER…

Laharl is selfish and eats the pudding from the Sea of Gehenna that Etna’s had stashed away. Apparently this is the last straw and Etna strikes out on her own to become powerful enough to kick Laharl’s ass and gain his Overlord title (she says kill, but… lol it’s Etna). She becomes a bit famous during this time and manages to hack her title so it says “Beauty Queen.”

Basically, Etna ends up in the world of Veldime, a human world cursed to become a Netherworld by Overlord Zenon. Zenon is known as the God of Overlords and is Etna’s target. She runs into the two main characters (one of whom is Zenon’s daughter) around Chapter 3, and a handful of chapters later, she defeats Zenon in a Big Damn Heroes moment (much to her chagrin). She goes to Adell’s house to brag, but finds that her title hasn’t changed, so she figures that that Zenon must have been a fake.

A bit peeved, the D2 mains decide that they’re going to try to summon Zenon (again-first time they got Rozalin), but to do that, they need the nail of a Demon Lord. They go with Etna. After they catch up to her, she does give them a nail… a fake one. When they use it in the summoning process, the group instead ends up summoning Etna, who has gone all the way down to level one. With this she decides to follow the mains to get her levels back.

After some time, they end up at the top of the Shinra Tower, where Laharl appears out of nowhere, demanding that Etna come home. Etna says no and Laharl beats everyone up. Then he decides to break the seal that’s on Rozalin and unleashes her super powered evil side, who beats the crap out of Laharl. Laharl retreats.

The next part is optional, but probably canon. Basically, Laharl shows up at Adell’s house. He decides that the only reason he didn’t win was because he wasn’t the main character and decides that he’s going to try and take over the game to make up for it. Suddenly… Flonne! Laharl tells Flonne his plan and she seems cool with it, but Etna is very unimpressed and says that if Laharl apologizes she’ll let him in the group. Flonne likes this idea but Laharl is stubborn and decides to fight. He and Flonne lose, but Rozalin and Adell feel sorry for him and decide to let him be the main character for 100 seconds. Flonne suggests an anime segment for this time and Laharl agrees, but decides not to let Flonne in. Etna, being the devious Etna that she is, yoinks Flonne to the side and tells her her own idea on how to get Laharl back. Hilarity ensues, Laharl retreats, and Flonne decides to join the party.

Flonne then comes up with an idea to settle Laharl and Etna’s feud, and Laharl is summoned to Holt Village once again. He’s in a pretty pathetic state now, and kind of just wanders over to where the party is. Etna says he can join up again if he apologizes, but Laharl is still stubborn and they fight again. After winning, while Etna is explaining what happened to Adell and Rozalin, Adell’s sister feeds Laharl and Laharl ends up joining the party.

Then everyone defeats Overlord Zenon. Etna steals away Adell’s little sister, who has become a huge Etna fan by this point, and Etna, Laharl, and Flonne, go back to the castle together, a trio once again. Awwwwwww…

Supernatural Abilities: As a Demon Lord/Beauty Queen, Etna is extremely powerful, capable of tossing around balls of dark energy with ease. She has three main attacks that she uses: Prinny Raid, which sends down a nice carpet bombing of explosive blue penguinsinners; Sexy Beam, where she sends down beams of energy in a heart shape while making poses; and Chaos Impact, where tons of energy balls are thrown, followed by one giant one. I figure the only skill Etna would be able to use while in Chicago would be Sexy Beam, as she lacks the prinnies to use Prinny Raid and Chaos Impact would be overkill.

While Etna also has access to a variety of spear skills in the game, I figure she would probably only be able to have the first three, as, after that, things get a bit over the top. The first skill in order of strength is Impaler, where the user makes a high leap into the air and tosses down the spear, now charged with electricity, into the opponent, along with a bolt of lightning. The second skill is Lightning Spear, which is a flurry of jabs followed by a charge. The final skill is Asteroid Drop, where the user spins and gathers energy, leaping into the air and coming down with enough power to force the ground up and cause a small crater.

Now, while this seems like a lot, the trip to Chicago has made it much harder to use any of these skills. Basic energy balls and Impaler won’t take too much out of her, but Asteroid Drop and Sexy Beam will definitely take awhile to recover from and might be more of a desperation attack than anything else. Sexy Beam also has the problem of being an attack with a very, very odd attack range, and so it’s entirely possible that if she’s off by the slightest bit, she will miss the target entirely.

I’m not entirely sure whether to list this one here or in the natural abilities, since it’s an ability not really elaborated on, but the wings on Etna’s back are capable of growing to allow for flight.

Natural Abilities: Etna is proficient in guns, axes, and spears, though she prefers the to use the latter. She is also extremely cunning, capable of making plans without a hint to her actions, and capable of dropping lies without a second thought. She knows the ways of a demon well, and before you know it, you might just have a knife to your back. She also seems to be pretty good at being able to tell how expensive something is by looking at it.

Oh, and while it’s a very specific skill and will only be shown with more canon mates, she is very, very good at pestering Laharl and Flonne.

Possessions: Aside from her clothes (what little there are), Etna brings with her a giant, ornate spear, the Elder Spear, which is her primary means of attack. Without this spear, she is (obviously) unable to use any of the spear abilities mentioned above. She also probably has a variety of sweets in her inventory, which would normally be able to heal her, but I figure that kind of thing’s only possible in the Disgaea universe.
